Prelude to an engine build
Prelude to an engine build
As several of you know I bought a 48 Olds 2 years ago with the intention of building a Olds hotrod. Well as we all know the economy fell thru the floor and several of us including myself put things on hold. I have been collecting parts here and there from people who have abandoned their builds plus a few new parts. I am finally dropping the hammer on the engine build. Here are some pictures of the gathered parts for your entertainment. The block is headed into the machine shop by Friday. I will post pictures as the assembly begins and will start the major build thread on the body in a couple of weeks. I have to go to Mississippi and Texas most of next week.
your taking it to Jim Greene's in monroe right? I think you told me that before.
What are the build plans? Cam/heads etc that you are going to use?
is the toy in that box going behind this motor or is that for a different car?
Cool stuff!

Clutch setup for the TKO600 5 speed.
Everything shown is going into the 48 Olds. I'll post a build sheet with the cam specs, piston specs soon. Have to meet with the machine shop and go over a few things first.
Haven't made up my mind on the "N" crank it is drilled for a 4-speed. or the NOS forged steel crank not drilled. Might just sell it and use the money elsewhere it is heaver then the "N" crank.
So many decisions to make. But finally moving forward

Hi Pat,
Cam looks awesome
! Please keep us posted, I'm using that very same piston in this next build, nice and light.
Imo use the N crank, lighter than the forged and plenty strong enough. Your combo with a Torker you'd be looking at low 500hp, not sure what it will be with the dual quad but I'm sure it will still be a strong runner.
Good luck and thanks for the update!

It's about time to start moving forward on the 48!
Looking forward to details of the build. Looks like some cool stuff you have - I like the dual quad setup!
However, one piston is not gonna get you very far - you might want to get a few more...
If you plan to go through dallas lemme know!

Engine dropped off at the machine shop this morning at 10:30. I am stoked. The owner Chuck graduated from Bothell High School and the auto shop class in 1984 exactly 20 years after I graduated from the same High School and the same auto shop course. Spent 2 hours talking about the changes what they teach in shop now. We also take about cars and hotrods in general spent two hours discussing my build, great guy. I expect good things to come of this.
