painting Thornton W/Zs
painting Thornton W/Zs
I received a new pair of these in the mail today - Christmas early. I'll take pictures later.
Has anyone who purchased a new pair of these Thornton WZ reproductions had particular success with PAINTING them? They are truly beautiful right out of the box - but I've been told they won't stay that way if you don't paint them. They ship in an anti-rust bag - is there like a coating or something on them that should be removed before paint?
I had planned to paint them with this:
Eastwood Exhaust Paint, High-Temp

Thanks

I just had a non-productive internet chat with Jet Hot https://www.jet-hot.com/thermal-barrier/ about this...not sure I was on their frequency.
Hmm...you're talking about shipping them off to someone aren't you?
I've made contact with this guy, who's local to me:

Is this what you're talking about?

https://www.ebay.com/i/332255482279?chn=ps This is what I used and very pleased with it. It was painted on my 62 Jetfire exhaust manifolds in 2012 and is still perfect. I have driven it around 5000 miles since then. Just brush it on, no need for a spray gun. It left zero brush marks when it dried.
X2...Por 15 manifold paint. That stuff has been on my 442 for almost 20 YEARS and still looks good. My car was DRIVEN thousands of miles each year. Touched them up a few times. Now it's been on my 67 GS 400 for about 8 years. On my 70 GS 455 for 6 years. The 70 GS went maybe 3K miles this summer, looks great! Personally...I think anybody who jet coats is either rich or crazy. And...it's really over-restoration! But...hey...it's your $$$!!!.

I would go with the POR 15 high temp paint. I haven't used it but I've read many positive reviews. I did use POR 15 engine paint on my block and it's still in excellent shape 8 years later.
Don't use the auto parts store hi-temp engine paint or BBQ grill paint. It will just burn off and look lame.
Ask me how I know.

Sounds like POR-15 is the favorite paint around here. I unfortunately already bought the $44 worth of Eastwood stuff a while back - but "that's alright - worry about that later."
I can get pints of the POR-15 #44216 from a paint shop here in town for $20/each.
I received a quote from Jet-Hot: $375 + shipping both ways to OK. They recommended their color #2038 Cast Iron:

I have also made phone contact with this guy (Greg):

who as near as I can tell does pretty much exactly what Jet-Hot does (apply High Temp Coating to exhaust parts) except this time based out of the northwest part of hometown Houston, TX (two car rides, no shipping). He quoted $200 and we've exchanged a couple of e-mails. He stated that he mixes silver and black, from the same manufacturer, in 10% increments to achieve the desired color.
I tried reaching out to these people via their website but they haven't gotten back: http://www.polydyn.com/headers-exhaust
I'm leaning towards getting them coated locally (instead of painting them myself). "Lower underhood temps" sounds like enough of a sell alone to me. Sure its 10x the price but they'd be virtually impervious to most mishaps, isn't that right?
