Original Rad Questions

So, as some of you know, I have an aftermarket, aluminum radiator in my 1961 Olds 98, 394. I am wondering if anyone knows the dimensions of the original, brass radiator that came in it. It was accidentally junked about 14 years because it was damaged. I am looking to replace the current one with a bigger one, as there are gaps on either side with about 2 inches to spare for a wider core fit. I think the air flow issue of an original overheating problem may be due to the smaller rad.

With that being said, I am looking at US Radiator out of Alabama and they have a brass radiator, 3 row, with dimensions that are bigger than my current rad. 24-3/4 wide on the core VS 22-3/4 on my current core; 2 more inches wide of core.

Anyone know any dimensions for the original?

Thanks all.

I like US Radiator. I investigated using one of theirs on one of our early 60s MOPARs. On those the factory uses integrated mounts. Unless you provide those to US Radiator with dimensions, your new radiator will not have the factory mounting ears. I am not familiar with what a 61 Olds used. My suggestion is investigate this issue and find the correct radiator for your Olds first.

I actually had a guy on eBay that I’ve bought some body parts from, and he happens to have a radiator for the 88, mine is a 98, but I think it’s the same. He will get me dimensions on it before I pull the trigger. The 98 is longer in length but width and all else are the same, which is why his rear bumper and other trim for the rear fit perfectly! Trying to stay original here with parts. This would be great if this works out and it’s in decent condition.

Three full-size radiators used in '61 and '62. No specs. I don't know what the difference is between air conditioning and special cooling/police.

Let me know when/if you need them and I can grab them off my car.
I had mine recored by a local radiator shop for a little less than a new one from US Radiator. He had told me at the time he wouldn't mind doing shipping to get it done for anyone, but you know the prices for shipping now is ridiculous.

Waiting for confirmation from the seller on this. Can this dent be repaired? This is the one he has for me. It should fit perfectly, even though it's from an 88.

You could close off a tube for a repair. However, I would presume any used radiator will need a clean out and maybe a replacement core.

I have no idea about repairing that. If it isn't leaking from that spot I would imagine if you were to straighten it out that could cause it to split and leak. Only way to tell is to fill it up and pressure test it. There might be a kit to do that from one of the auto part stores that you could rent/borrow.

My g u e s s is that can be repaired. Other than the pictured damage the radiator looks pretty good externally. Can you get pics if the top of the tubes through the cap?
