Hello all,

I am freshening up the 455 in one of my 71 442s and am replacing the oil pump. I bought the Melling M22FHV. My question is about the extra pink spring. The enclosed instructions say it increases the pressure in the pump. Should I use the pink spring? What applications warrant using a HV HP oil pump. The motor is pretty much stock with a nicer cam.

 

All of them. There is no downside to using the HV pump. The "suck the pan dry" myth is another one that refuses to die.

 

I am using the high volume pump. The question is: do I use the pink high pressure spring instead of the green standard pressure spring?

 

Sorry, didn't read that carefully enough. Higher pressure means more parasitic horsepower loss. For a near-stock engine used for street driving, I wouldn't bump the pressure up.

I replaced my stock 350 w/ a Melling & the high volume spring 2+ yrs ago - works like a charm.

 

The different spring does NOT change the volumn. It changes the pressure.

 

Ooops. That was probably directed towards me. You're correct. I used the MELLING M22F & w/ the HP spring. Pressure on the brain, volume on the fingers.
