need headers for a 455

i am looking for a set of headers for a 1973 olds 98,,,My current situation is the car has the stoock manifold and it is rigged up for dual exhaust..The cross over section is cut off and crimped and each side now goes out the back...I would rather make it look better with a couple headers,,I have looked on the internet and found them but there is so many different lengths and sizes i dont know what to get...

You should be able to run standard 455 headers on your 73 98 since it is front steer. You can also run W and Z manifolds if you can come across any. That is what I put on my 71 98. They work well.

IMHO, I would only purchase headers from Doug's Headers or another high end company. If you buy a set of cheapie headers from Summit and have to "modify" them to install them then it is a waste of money. Spend the extra $400 and get a good set that won't have that baked and battered look after a month on your car.

If you don't want to spend that much on headers then you can always buy a set of Dynomax, Hooker, or Hedmann headers. They run about $180-$280. However, be aware that they probably won't fit very well and you might have to "modify" them to get them to fit. Plus, they are probably going to look baked and crusty after a month or so. If you are ok with this then go for it!

Why does the cheaper ones have the crusty look after a month...When i picked up my heads today the owner told me he will check into some chrome ones for me and also check on a price on a set of black ones..he said he bet he can get me some chrome ones at a pretty good deal...

From my experience the cheaper headers have a low quality paint on them that bakes off pretty quickly after starting the engine. It might take a few months but they don't maintain their finish the way a higher quality set will. Of course, you can buy a set of Dynomax or Hooker headers with good ceramic coating or chrome but it will cost more. I have never heard of anyone installing a set of Dynomax, Hooker, or Hedmann headers without having to modify them first. IMHO, it isn't worth it. You would be better off with W and Z manifolds, but if you want headers then that is cool too. Just be aware of what you are up against.

You will get what you pay for. $400 Hooker headers fit better than $150 headers. $600 Kooks are better still.

I have to remind people that the 455 made a lot of power with stock manifolds. It whats inside the motor that makes power. Headers will help exhaust flow a little better. It all comes down to what you want and what you have to send. "Modify" means hit them a hammer put dents in them to make them fit. You could have a nice exhaust put on your car using stock manifolds that would cost about the same as headers. You will have problems with your starter if you use headers.
