Mystery Crank

I have been collecting parts for my 455 thats going into my 48 Olds for over a year and it is going to the machine shop this week and here's the question.

I have a new so called forged mystery crank #400943 that I would like a little more history on. Why is it called the mystery crank. It weighs 74.5 lbs The "N" crank I have weighs 71.5 lbs. Which is the better crank for my build. I will have to have it drilled for the 5-speed in either case

Mystery crank?
Like the Mystery shifter?

According to the Olds Wiki it's from a '68 full size 455, forged steel, 2 barrel w/tow package.
They say it's rare in the wiki and the hot ticket if it is the forged deal.

They look like crankshafts to me.
So the "mystery crank" is a good one?

Post a good, close up detailed pic showing the "parting line" on the front face of the front crank throw.

Pat, if the forged steel crank is in good shape that would be the one to use as it's stronger than the nodular iron crank. They're hard to find for the 455 and bring a good price whenever they come up for sale. One of those parts I call "treasure" when you find them. John

Yes,that is a forged crank for a 455.They were made in 1968 only,& they didn't even make them the whole year. You could use it since you own it,but they are not absolutely neccessary.I have always sold mine to help fund the engine project. The N-cranks have shown to withstand 700HP with the right parts,& I haven't had any of those fail yet.I am now beyond that power range,& had a billet crank made.

I'll most lilley put it up for sale as my build will stay in the 500+ hp range. Anybody know what its worth. It has cosmoline protecting the bearing surfaces and has not been installed in a engine. I picked it up from a guy whole used to race Olds in the early 80's. It was pack in a box from a machine shop with a tag on it discribing it.

lol It's useless! I'll take it off your hands for 50 bucks.
A brand new crank should fetch some big bucks.

There was an NOS crank like that for sale about a year ago or so,that came out of Pennsylvania, but I don't know what it went for.I've seen them go anywhere from $300.00 to $900.00,depending on who is looking. The fact that it is 74lbs is another reason I went with a billet. My new crank, with 4.700" stroke & all the bells & whistles, weighs a hair over 55lbs.
