mild cam--detonation

Could a mild cam shaft (218/224) in a higher compression (10.5-1) engine cause detonation?

Yes. But it can also squeeze by, depending on the tune, gear etc.

When is the detonation occurring? It may be attributed to your timing settings, lean fuel feed, etc.

I've actually solved the problem of pinging with a timing adjustment and the addition of octane booster this past year, but was wondering if cam duration was a factor

Yes, cam duration and valve opening / closing pointes are factors as they determine the cylinder pressure on the compression stroke (dynamic compression).
