That had to be fun.

Oh yes. My car presently has 3.23 gears and it’s not quite as peppy as the 3.55s were. Those would chirp the tires on shift to 2nd gear at 20 MPH with moderate throttle. Going WOT at 60 forced a downshift to 2nd then chirped on the upshift to 3rd.

Sorry Andrew did not mean to discourage you. Information overload, I am an Olds guy since the mid 80s and a numbers addict, didn't mean to do that. Throw in a few 100 passes at the track over the years and I can get carried away ...

But getting familiar with what you already have and proceeding slowly is a good way to go. Your ride came with 370 lb ft of torque that is a lot of fun on the street as is.
you need to stop talking so much, and listen more. you don’t have a freak’n clue,, all you’re doing is scaring this guy who is doing his first engine build.

all you do is spout off crap from years ago …you need a time out 😂😂😂😂

let this guy learn and have fun doing his first Olds engine…he seems to have the basics figured out.

😂 Yes. I feel like an old soul as well. You have no idea how much stuff I write up and never post... Precisely because I think I am over doing it...

I'm thinking of going with 3.23 gears too, seems like the best all around, I don't do lots of highspeed freeway driving but I live in a mountainous region, would the engine be screaming in inclines or is it good?

My car has the same gearset and it seems like the best all-around compromise. At highway speeds (75 MPH-plus) sometimes you wonder when it's gonna shift into overdrive, but you get used to it. Around town it's just fine.

Back in the late 60's and early 70's, 3.23 and 3.31 were pretty standard ratio's in all brands of cars. The 1973-74 OPEC Oil Embargo brought huge changes from auto manufacturers. Rear differential ratio's were the quickest and easiest to improve fuel economy. You should be perfectly fine with 3.23.
....Just my two cents worth.

What size rear tires and what speed do you drive on the highway? If it is fairly short trip's, not an issue. If it is many hours, consider a full overhaul with proper bearing clearance, which is an argument in itself. Consider Procomp heads over your crappy J heads. Smaller ports and valves than the current Edelbrock heads, just get quality components installed in them. As said, a quality 2500 stall is good choice unless you go wild on the cam.

245/60/14 tires or 245/60/15 if i could find some 15' SSII. I would rarely go over 60mph and not more than an hour or hour and a half highways at most. I will swap the J heads sooner or later but I haven't really considered the procomps as they are chinese made, how well do they compare with the edelbrock heads knowing that they are half their price?

There are copys of the edelbrock head and I found the casting very nice, just upgrade the hardware same as you would with edelbrocks.

Correction though, they’re copies of the Gen I Edelbrocks. That’s a 15 year old design.
BUT yes they're cheap, and can be improved.
