My stock exhaust always sounded….well stock…..I like a pretty quiet car.

Anyhow, after struggling with another crappy dizzy condenser I finally got my car running smooth again. But, for some reason the exhaust now has a very slight rumble….actually I kinda like it, not too loud but defiantly louder than last week.

I also just started running 93 octane….not sure if that did it?

 

Did the car have any exhaust explosions while that distributor was acting up?

 

I do remember a pretty good backfire as I was trying to get it started over and over….but I thought it came from intake, not really sure.

 

You blew out something in the exhaust system as rocketrader is eluding to.

 

Hmmm, I bet that’s what it was. It doesn’t sound like an exhaust leak or rattle. Just I nice low rumble.
I like it so I’m gonna leave it as is.
i guess you guys are talking about maybe a baffle in one of mufflers or maybe a critter nest got cleared out.

 

Have you taken the time to crawl under the car and inspect the exhaust system?

 

I've never heard of octane affecting exhaust tone. Unless the rattle of detonation was obscuring the rumble before you switched.

 

x2 on checking the exhaust for blowouts or damage.

.......after freshly starting the engine on a cool morning. The steam will be prevalent at the leaks...if there are any.

 

Next time I have it lifted I’ll scoot underneath and check the mufflers or as you mentioned and also check for condensation drip between engine and tailpipes.

Yesterday I got down low by tail pipes and the rumble definitely sounded like it was coming directly out of pipe end.

thanks for clarifying it probably isn’t the 93 gas, I didn’t think so but thought I’d ask since that was a recent change.

 

I finally had a chance to get under car today…you guys were correct. Seam on right muffler had a 3” blowout at seam, opened it like a beer can. I never knew backfires were that powerful.

i was able to hammer the hole shut to within 1/8” or so. As a temp fix until I take it to my exhaust guy….i tried a few cheap products from AutoZone….JB exhaust putty, filled the seam real nice for a temp fix. Also, covered putty with fix tape. If you look closely at before and after pics on tape. It also magically turns your rusty pipe into cool stainless steel tips. Haha.

its back to quiet sound….but I’ll miss the slight rumble.

 

You could always ask your exhaust guy if he could install turbo mufflers in place of the OE mufflers. No need to run 3" sewer pipes with a crossover.

 

I’m gonna do that. They are a really cool old school family exhaust shop that knows everything about exhaust.
i am going to ask them for mostly stock sound but with a slight bit of rumble….nothing loud.
They should be able hook me up with a perfect setup…. I’m guessing the turbos do that?

 

"Turbo muffler" is just a generic term. Dynomax or Flowmaster mufflers are both highly rated. The exhaust shop you have do the work might also have house brand mufflers that could save you some money.
