Internal external balancer PLEASE HELP

So my SS 400 has been at the machine shop and he sublet it for balancing. The sublet shop calls and says my balancer is off of a LS 400 and won’t work. I just got it back from the Damper Doctor in California for a rebuild and they told me it was correct for my 67. The machine shop says it isn’t. My machinist told me that it will shake bad using the one I have. I told him the car didn’t shake at all with my balancer that is in question.

Who the hell is right here?

Impossible to tell without a picture of your current balancer. A 1967 BBO balancer should look like the first photo, a 1968-up should look like the second. FYI, all 1964-1990 Olds V8s were externally balanced from the factory.

The long stroke motors have a different balance. The shop SHOULD be able to rebalance the later balancer to match your motor, but depending on keyway location relative to the weight offset, that might be a problem.

If they balance it correctly it shouldn't shake, no matter what. They would just have to take weight off/add in a different spot if using the "wrong" balancer.
I just had a 350 on the dyno with a Pioneer flexplate. Everything was balanced together. However the flexplate decided to throw the weight off during a pull. I installed another Pioneer flexplate that I bought at the same time, it shakes so bad I have to disassemble the engine and rebalance it to this second flexplate.
My point? None of this stuff is absolute. Have it balanced with whatever balancer you choose and hope like hell you never have to replace it. Or better yet have them balance it internally and you'll never have to worry about a potential imbalance.
