Intake manifold

I am being told without some mods an aftermarket intake manifold will cause trouble fitting the shaker on it for my trans am due to the 455 being taller than the 403. I can't confirm this to Than the 455 I have came out of a ta but it had the stock manifold.

So I guess I need to find a stock manifold as mine was too trashed to save. Is there any one I should look for that's any better than another? Obviously it needs to be a 4 bbl but not sure if it makes a difference in years or models.

Thanks

The 403 is a small block Olds. The 455 is a big block Olds. The BBO has a taller deck height, thus the taller intake carb flange that can cause a problem with the shaker hood. Aftermarket intakes tend to raise the carb flange even more, compounding the problem. A Toronado intake will have the lowest carb flange of any BBO intake.

My very good friend has a 455 Olds in his '78 T/A. He has a Performer intake on it. He had to make some mods but got the shaker hood to work.
Do search on the Pontiac sites, there's accompany that makes a special drop setup that should work with a 455 Olds.

Just be careful how low the shaker fits on the carb!

A friend of mine had a 455 powered TA, when he got the car the shaker was bolted solid to the hood. He wanted the shaker to shake, so he bought one of the drop base air cleaner assemblies from a Pontiac vendor. Although I cant recall the specifics, we also made some other changes to the engine. First test drive, ran great up until about 4000rpm, then would start spitting and sputtering, just like a ignition problem. I swapped plugs, wires, cap, rotors, MSD box, entire ignition system, carb, anything and everything trying to figure out what was causing the problem. I started playing around with the tension on the air door of the Q-Jet carb, I left the air cleaner off during the test drive. It ran great! Reinstalled the air cleaner, misfire was back. After a lot of head scratching and examination I notice the lid to the air cleaner was about 1/4 away from the vent to the float bowl. I'm not sure how close the air cleaner lid sits on a stock airbox but it was close enough to cause issues on this car. We did a little customizing and trimming on the vent and lid for a little more clearance.

Thanks guys. The drop base air cleaners from blocker are cool but it uses the shaker for the air intake. The issue is when you look into the shaker when sitting in the car you see this ugly air cleaner in there. Also when it rains you have no protection and it is sucking in rain. So that's my dilemma. On the good side, you don't have the ugly air hoses all over the engine

Here is the one that was on it and it worked. It was too rusty to save

That's a 68-9 455 intake - and that is so NOT "too rusty to save" - that will blast clean easily.
PM sent on it

I have spare Toronado intakes to get you hood clearance and performance. I know where there is a factory experimental AL low rise intake but he wants like $1k for it.

Ok I had to search my memory banks a bit and there was a fit issue with the stock manifold I had, so it looks like the toronado manifold will be the way to go. I forgot that the shaker "fit" however it's not supposed to fit that tight!
