Intake interchange? 371 & 394?

Greetings all, I just brought home Grand ma's 'Oldsmobile. Straight from a barn in New Jersey is a 2 dr '62 Super 88 with 41k on the clock. It has been inside and was last registered in '86. It is very nice for a car of that age here in the rust belt, I am very pleased...
Anyway, It appears that the intake is cracked on the #1 & 3 intake runner, looks like it has been that way for a long time and it seems to run fine but I am thinking of replacing it. THere is a '58 six pack on ebay which fits a 371. Will that fit my 394?

Thanks,

Matt In NJ ( Lazlobassett )

I think I'd stick with a factory 4 barrel intake. The car has a Slim Jim automatic transmission which is very sensitive to throttle valve rod adjustment. You stick a 3x2 intake on there you'll have to figure some way to get that adjustment right, and if it's off the transmission will do all sorts of hateful things.

You sure it's more than a surface crack? If it is a substantial crack, it will create a vacuum leak. Try spraying some WD40 or such on the crack with engine running. If engine speed changes, you have a leak. If not, you should be OK.

Hmmm...I was reading about the Slim Jim here last night, sounds as bad or worse than the early 700R4s...I think the intake may have been off in sometime past ( only 40k though?) as one of the power steering bracket bolts is snapped off in the intake.
I am waiting for a new fuel pump and a water pump and then I'll see whats what.
The wheel cylinders are in so perhaps today it will have brakes again...

What fluid does the Slim Jim take? Mine looks clear, like regular hydraulic oil for one of the loaders or whatever..

Thanks,

Matt

When I rebuilt my Slim Jim transmission I used Dexron Mercron in it. I have never heard of a clear transmission fluid.

If your intake is cracked you can have it repaired. I had the intake and exhaust manifolds on my car repaired at a local welding shop. They did and excellent job.

#1 ..The 371 intakes of '57 and '58 do not work on '59 thru '64 371 - 394 engines. #2 good luck with a tri power and a Slim Jim transmission - you will go nuts trying to get the kickdown anywhere near where it needs to be. # 3 I have a '62 394 intake with zero cracks. PM me if interested
