illegal to restamp engine id #s?
Just for thought, is it illegal to have your engine stamped to match your vin numbers if you disclose this to any perspective buyers? If you told the new buyer that the motor had been stamped to match, what if he then tries to sell the car as an all original numbers matching engine? Could anyone really know if it is not the correct engine? (let's assume a correct letter code block and date codes within a few months of the build date to the car)

TR,
You can "stamp" anything you want to on the engine, just dont "remove" or alter anything.
The State Police in your area can give you a more accurate answer to this.
It's dangerous business.

Factory procedure when replacing a warranty block, carb etc was that the dealership would transfer the VIN to the warranty component and return the defect to the factory.
'Course a job like that would have a paper trail.
Given the money cars are trading for, and the litigious environment the product liability and trial lawyers have created for us, I'd make sure it had that paper trail, or at least a notarized disclaimer that the engine was restamped for restoration purposes only. Then you hope it stays with the car.
