Idea of horsepower
Idea of horsepower
I have a 71 Cutlass S and we are changing out the engine from a 350 to a 455. This engine is 40 over with high comp. pistons (.12 dish), Duration Adv. 270/270, 224/224 @.050 501 lift cam, 110 degree, with large valve C heads, quadrajet carb, Performer intake. I am looking for just a gen. idea.
Thanks in advance

I built a nice 455 for my car, similar to your's with a little more cam, and not sure of the hp, but low end torque is off the charts. My cousin from out of town, stopped by with his new Mustang GT and was interested. So we put three of us in the car, and went for a ride. My cousin in the back, almost crapped his pant's, when we hit it at 25 mph. Rear posi 255 rubber, instantly went up in smoke. My cousin was proud of his new Mustang when he got there, but didn't want to go near it, after that ride.
Yes I'm pretty pumped my self about getting it done. Should be done in about 10 more days. This also has 255 rubber with a 3.73 posi rear th350 with a kit. Thank you for the info cutlassefi. This is the nicest car, it turns heads everywhere I go. Now they will here the rumble before they see the storm. lol It doesn't have that much power to be a storm, but its my storm, and I love my Cutlass.
These 455's turn alot of torque. Horsepower numbers can be decieving. HP numbers are best left for the track.
Mine just roasts my 275/60/15 when I hit it. And yes, no brakes.
Like alot of other burn out video's you might see.

Better find a location for race gas, with that kind of compression!
Without it, you'll be melting pistons real quick.
Maybe talk to Cutlass EFI about a cam that'll lower the static compression, and give you a better chance!

Thanks Delta, I have a friend that is doing most of it for me with a liitle help from me. The engine now is getting alot done. Well I think its alot, to most of you guys that do this alot is is problt standard policy. For mr I'm very pumped up. I know today he told me that the block is getting dipped, it will get honed, new mains and cam bearings, balanced, new 40 over pistons, and the c heads are getting done with 350lb springs. Thats why i wanted to get an idea of horespower. When i asked him he just smiles and says that I will have fun and don't think about it so much. I know i have a bunch of cash rapped up into this car but it's the nicest Cutlass I have ever had out of 4. And thank you for the offer of the help and tools. We should meet up sometime. Being 50 miles away I'm sure you will be here for BACK TO THE BRICKS here in Flint.
Yeah, Flint is a nothing drive from the Detroit area, as know guys that do do it everyday. I've done some work and shopping there, as bought my floor jack at Harbor frieght tools there, when was the only store in town. Not much on car cruises, as don't know where I'll be be work. Car is set set up pretty good for it though, with a keyless entry/alarm. Works for the trunk too, so key never goes near the paint. Back to the Bricks, looks pretty good though. You have my e-mail, so mybe get me your contact info, and I'll send you some pic's of my 455 build. Mark
