Hydraulic Roller Cam for A 400
Hi all,
I just got off the phone with Lynn at Mondello Performance. I remembered the name from when I had my Toronado, so I came to this site to see why it was familiar. After reading a few posts, it all came back to me. I am looking for a Hydraulic Roller Cam setup for a 1969 400 G Engine. The bottom end has been freshened up with stock crank and rods, but .040 over forged pistons. I am looking for a cam to maximize the power from this engine. I think 400 should be easy, but 450hp is the goal. I have a set of C heads that are fresh from the machine shop, big valves, gasket matching done, and 82cc chambers and an Edelbrock Performer Intake. Lynn states that they have a cam that can get me over 500hp with no changes to my engine. I don't know much about olds motors, but that seems like a stretch. My toronado had the 425, but it was bone stock with 80,000 miles. It moved ok, but FWD and 2 tons of steel on a wimpy gear ratio isn't going to blow your doors off. I restored that engine with the original carb, cause I wasn't worried about performance.
The car this 400 is going into is a 74 Firebird with a 700r4, 2800 stall, and 4:10 gears. It currently has an olds 350, but I got a great deal on this 400 and it just needs a cam and some assembly. What would you guys recommend? Who's a legitimate cam grinder out there? Comp cams doesn't warm me over. I love their chevy cams, but I'm not sure if they got the stuff when it comes to oldsmobile. I'd like to go with a roller cam. With the low revs of these motors, are roller rockers necessary? Do they make beehive springs for Olds?
Thanks guys!

Mark definitely knows his stuff. When I did the 307 in my Wife's Riviera I had Crane grind me a hydraulic roller. I wanted on that was as close to the original cam as possible and they were the only ones that would do it. They have several in their catalog.

I have a PM going on with CutlassEFI. Seems like a pretty helpful guy and we should be able to figure out a good cam here. I just got to pour through these posts to find out some tricks to make this old G block a better performer.

The small bore is the Achilles heel of that block for sure.
