How to torque the harmonic balancer bolt properly

What is the best way to keep the crank from turning as you torque the balancer bolt to 160 lbs? Without breaking something
Motor is in the car btw

Is the engine out of the car? I used to stick a pry bar in one of the flex plate holes and it would hold against the block.

On that one I put the 1/2 impact gun on it and hammer away. I am sure it is not the proper way but never had one come loose. I do not believe the impact gun is getting it to the 160 ft lbs but never checked either.

He said motor is in the car btw.
Op- put two bolts in the balancer to hold it with a pry bar etc., then tq it from there.

Where are you at ? I made this tool years ago when I was working on my Wifes engine still in the car. Bolts to the damper and is long enough to hit the crossmember

Interesting. I am going by my AERA software but I have done a couple of 425's and if I remember correctly they use the same giagantic bolt as all of the other Oldsmobiles ? And they are all in the 160-170 range. I just looked in a 1980 parts book and it shows all v-8's from 56-74 with the same bolt part number and it is 3/4" x 16 x 1 1/2" long.

I wonder if the manual is a misprint ? I dont have a service manual in that year but maybe somebody else does. Do you remember what size bolt yours was ?

No misprint. 1965 was a one year bolt: 1/2"-20 x 1-1/4" bolt.

I wonder what that note 4 is ? Interesting. But right above and below that they show 56-72 and 56-74 being a 3/4" bolt.

Not sure this adds value to what's already being discussed - from my 1971 CSM...

I am in Charlotte NC and was considering fabricating a tool exactly like that! Can I borrow it and pay shipping both ways of course?
