Help!

I just took my 69 Olds 400 block down to the machine shop and they said I needed .30-40 over pistons due to wear. I cannot find oversize pistons anywhere. Anyone know of some options?

You actually need .030" or .040" over pistons (that's 30 or 40 thousandths, not 3 or 4 tenths).

Depending upon what your goals are for this engine, you need to determine if you want forged pistons or cast pistons, and you also need to determine what compression ratio you want. If you merely want cast type factory replacements, Egge Machine has them; if you want forged in a specific compression ratio then likely you will need to custom order them.

Wrong piston and description. They didn’t make 400E’s in 68-69. He has a 68-69 400G block. It has a much smaller bore than an E block.
Slight mistake there.

Ok, My screw up 🙂🙂 I was actually trying to make a point that stuff is available with a little searching. I'm almost more curious why his machine shop isn't getting them for him ?? I rarely tell customers to get parts.

I was wondering that when I first read the post as well. Seems the machine shop would be THE place to locate the required parts.

Yes I don't understand some of those guys. I don't make a killing off of the parts but every little bit helps and plus that way I know that they're going to be correct. To be honest with you most of the time I can meet or even beat the online prices and still make a few dollars.

Makes me think the place doesn't want to do the work.

Maybe the shop isn't familiar with Olds engines. If so, he should find a shop that has a reputation for building Oldsmobiles.
