Going to pull the 455 / shopping list

hey there,

i'm going to pull the engine in some weeks for cleaning, inspection, re-painting and to put some new gaskets in it

engine ran (1)45.000 km ...but was sitting for at least 8 years till i fired her up in 2008...i've already installed new spark plugs, wires, ignition coil, dist. cap, points, water pump, fuel pump, thermostat...

any might-as-wells??

here's my shopping list...what would you add?

- harmonic balancer tools (for pulling / mounting)
- oil pan gasket
- freeze plugs
- exhaust manifold gasket
- timing chain
- timing chain cover gasket
- oil pump
- head gaskets
- intake manifold gasket
- valve cover gaskets
- ...

You are still running points, why not change to HEI?
I guess all new oil/fuel/air filters as well and the carb could use a complete overhaul then it's all good to go.

If you have an automatic and are going to be pulling it together, make sure you find something substantial to cover the end. I pulled my motor and trans last weekend and I used the bag and tape method, it was like a murder scene! . Trans fluid all over the place . I was cleaning it up for hours. Needless to say the bag method works for ****!

Procure a plastic plug or junk yoke from your local trans shop, dealer, or bonesyard. WIRE the yoke in place so it stays.

would love to do the camshaft...but then i would like to do it right like ebrock heads, lifters, springs, roller rockers...and all that stuff...no headers or aftermarket intake cause its a toronado...would like to keep the qjet....CR is 10,25:1, gear 3.08, street-strip-use, stock converter, stock 15" wheels, 4000+ lbs car

any recommendations?

I wouldn't do any more than whats on your list. It's the KISS thing people here have been talking about lately.

You will lose compression if the steel head gaskets are still in it. I would have the heads milled enough to make up the compression loss. You can get .028" Corteco, .038" Mr Gasket and .041" thick Felpro. Your stock gaskets are .017" thick. Cutlassefi is the guy on here for Olds cams and a Mr Gasket dealer.

The transmission will be staying in the car as I assume he's talking about the 70 Toronado in his pic. I would make a bar that crosses in front of the converter to make sure it won't fall out. I guess some stout nylon cord would work as well. Just run it through the mounting bolt holes.
My 70 Toronado weighed 4540 lbs. empty, just so you know.
Although the gaskets are cheaper in a kit the gasket thread on here lists those gaskets that are best to use for each area. Get some Right Stuff gasket sealer too for the trouble spots
The factory bore was 4.126 so if you're close to that I'd leave it. 45k km is roughly 27k miles which isn't much imo. I took my Toronado engine apart around 67k miles and there was a slight ridge at the top of the cylinder but overall it was real nice inside.

Take note of the ridge. If you have access to the tools, measure the bores just so you know.
