Finding TDC

Whats is the best way to turn over your motor manually, with the engine still in the car? I need to find TDC to apply timing tape to my harmonic balancer.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks, Tom

I would take a really big socket (> 1'', something like 1 1/4 but probably measure the nut on the crank first) with a breaker bar or a huge socket wrench and crank the heck out of it. I've been able to turn the engine around with 8 plugs in but it's a heck of a job, take your plugs out first and then haul away.

If you have lost the timing marks for some reason heres how you can find tdc;
Take #1 plug out and put a rod through the hole,
Turn the engine until the rod is more or less at minimum depth,
Turn the engine until the rod has dropped by a given amount, make sure the rod is clearly marked, them make a mark on the bottom pulley,
Turn the engine the opposite way until the rod has dropped by the same amount and mark the pulley again.
TDC is at the halfway point between the marks on the pulley.
Hope this helps.
Roger.
