Exhaust divider question..

Trawling through all the threads I can find on head modifications before I decide what I'm going to do with the C heads to replace my J heads with, I came accross this post from J-Chicago;

Thread here, post #31

Head Flow Information.. https://classicoldsmobile.com/forums...formation.html

"...The only thing I would change probably, would be to mill the exhaust side down flush with the divider instead of debating which one to mess with (all those clips , goop, and welding and what not)."

Is this a viable option, to mill down the exhaust side flush with the center divider? or have I missunderstood the post.

It is possible to mill the head flush with the exhaust divider. But there are some things to consider:

1/ It will bring your headers (or manifolds and pipes) closer to the block, starter, oil filter, oil pan, and transmission. Whether or not this is a problem will depend on all these parts.

2/ Taking metal off the heads will bring you closer to water and make the surface weaker.

3/ Moving the headers (or manifolds) closer changes the angle at which the roof of the exhaust port meets the headers. If you were picky enough to want the center divider flush, you should be even more picky about making this transition smooth -- maybe with only porting, or maybe by also raising the headers (which will require custom flanges).
