Also, after the minor unpleasantness of the '30s and '40s, and, in the East, the inconveniences of the '50s through the '80s, the Germans have a slightly different view of privacy than we do.
For instance, they're one reason why Google now automatically blocks out car license plates on Google Maps. Over there, you can also get your whole house blocked out.

Oddly, they're still okay with being asked for your "papers," though.

Cultures evolve differently, which is why travel is still slightly fun (though less so every year - the first time that my cell phone rang in Venice in 2000, and it was just a friend who didn't know I was travelling, it totally freaked me out. You've got to go pretty far to feel like you've gotten away these days).

But Venice is actually just sitting there on top of millions of gallons of sewage, which is fancifully referred to as "the lagoon."

Paris at least has les egouts, which take the sewage somewhere else.

Very true,

I went to zurich for the first time this summer, It blew my mind.

Thousands of helplessly beautiful women who the locals are too shy to talk to.

Who get easily scared when you try to talk to them whilst double-fisting two Molson X's and a hockey t-shirt

Sigh.

Nothing wrong with the ARP fasteners or H-beam rods, but they may be expensive overkill for your application.

hey guys..i'm curious about the clearances (mains, rods, cylinder to wall etc.) ..what do you recommend? (street/strip use)

Deck Clearance with the H-beam rods and the IC886 pistons calculated at: -0.015

i iordered the IC886 pistons...not the KB's i mentioned before

i know the machine shop needs to clear the block since i bought h-beam eagle connecting rods....anything else to consider?

oh yeah...and what about the deck height?

i'm planning to mount pro comp heads and want true 10,25:1 CR. don't know about the head gasket...better use a thicker one or the thinnest available?

heres what the calc. says ..i used that cometic 0.027" gasket

I love this tread! Eightballz, if you need parts for your car let me know. I scrapped a 70 and I still have a few parts left over.

yesterday the machine shop started working on the block..

so the next question is...what about the heads?

would like to mount a pair of aluminium heads..not sure if procomp or edelbrock.

what would you say? out of the box or a little customisation like other than stock valves, springs, porting etc.?

homecoming...after a 5 hour trip with a rented 2013 Audi A6

after 4 weeks the machine shop managed to finish the engine.

it has new pistons, rings, bearings, rods, rehone, rebore...and crank got balanced.

now i have to wait for all the small parts from summit and the heads and cam from cutlassefi

hope to start assembly by the end of february...1st drive in second week of april..i can hardly wait!!!

I'm sorry to say but your pistons are installed incorrectly. The valve pockets should be big, small, big, small, small, big, small, big.

Holy crap, you're right - I completely missed that.

Every single piston is backwards - exhaust valves are toward the center of the block on Olds, hence the relatively narrow exhaust manifold.

However, so long as all of the pistons / bores are the same size, he should be able to swap front 2 / rear 2 on each side and come out alright.

Yup. Sorry.

Here's the illustration from your link:

And here's a photo I just took in my barn, with two heads lined up, showing the intake and exhaust ports - you can see how the ports line up with their respective valves:

Ha Ha, I did the dumb thing and photographed them from the sides, instead of photographing the valves, like NOP did:

If you've got a ring compressor and a torque wrench, it should take an hour or two - no problem.

yup its wrong I did the same thing when i put mine in first, then I looked at the heads when i was getting ready to put them on and realized the sheet was wrong(some nice words came out of me after that). Nothing like practicing taking a whole set of pistons out and putting them in a couple of times

I made mine fit by putting the washer behind it and the bolt holding it in place, it seemed to work fine for me

little progress....i hope this time the position of the pistons is correct

i also installed the oilpump, pickup, freeze plugs, head studs and torque converter

now i need to wait for the heads and cam ... waiting is the hardest part

what do you guys think...how important is that 3rd nut which connects the rear oil deflector to one of the main caps? (see pic)

i think i stripped the thread on both the nut and the stud ... the other ones are fine.

oil pan mounted for dust protection...

next time i can install the head gaskets and prepare the block for painting

P.S.: note the license plate of that VW bus

The pistons look great, but I really don;t know anything about the Toro oil deflectors.

By the sound of it, I think it may be HeliCoil time...

as you know..i'm going to mount a set of edelbrock aftermarket heads.

since one of the choke tubes broke while tearing down the engine i wonder if its a good idea to do a electric choke conversion??

as far as i know the heat crossover is blocked anyway so there's no need for choke tubes

oh and as you can see i installed the ARP head stud kit but what am i gonna do with the bolts you can see in the picture?

i need them to mount the alternator and A/C bracket i guess...and one is necessary for the "hot"-light

Well, seeing as how you didn't really need the ARP bolts in the first place, I'd say just use your normal head bolts in those two positions.

And, No, I do not know whether they expand in a different way when hot, though I don't believe they do.
