Well, this one matters. You have a 455 from a 1969 Lansing-built Olds. The fact that the VIN derivative sequence number is above 600,000 tells us that the block came from a Toronado originally, since Toro sequence numbers started with 600,000 in the 1969 model year.

39M605828 = partial VIN# from 11/68 built 1969 Toronado

3 = Oldsmobile
9 = 1969
M = Lansing, MI assembly plant
605828 = VIN sequence (of the Toronado the engine is from)

F = large visual identifier of a casting # 396021 455 block ('68-'72)

283 = casting date - 283rd day of year (Thursday, October 10, 1968)

CFD = Central Foundry Division (GM's casting plants)

Lastly,
The 2 by the the 283 is the "mold number"
The number on the oil fill tube is the engine unit number.

These numbers are insignificant in this case.

Is there any info on where these blocks were cast? It looks like there were (late-'60s era) three GM CFD plants: NY, OH, IN.

Thanks guys, I pulled the engine out of the 69 toronado I used to have, I was just curious if they meant anything.

Not the Defiance, OH plant, I think. I've looked into CFD some, but have not found out a lot. Would love to find out a lot more. I believe there is a whole world of information that was there that is either well hidden, or lost by now.
Every casting made there (and there were *lots* for all of GM) had a casting drawing and a machining drawing *at least*. Are they all gone?
