Allen, I've got the perfect answer for you. Take your wife on a vacation to see the Redwoods in Northern California. But be sure and tow a trailer... you can stop at my place on the way home! I'll set you up with a 455 and whatever else you need John

That's a great idea! I'll get a hitch on the car. When I'm crossing the border I'll just say it's a sports car with the 'engine at the rear' Border crossing agents have no sense of humor lately.

You know with encouragement like this that one of these days you're gonna get a PM from me lettin you know I'm on my way.... When I move to BC it will be a much easier trip to your shopping mall...my wife would never know what hit her if I said I'm going to John's 'mall' in OR to do some 'shoppin'

Next month, next year, whenever you find yourself close enough to come down I'm sure I'll have some spare parts for you to look over

Allan, Come on down this spring and I will meet you there. John can roast a pig for us while we do our shopping!
Rumor has it he turned a rusted out car into a barbecue pit and used the drive train to run the rotisserie... Headers ran into the body for that fresh-smoked flavor. John, I want "regular" taste, not unleaded!

Well I guess she can cook that thing afterwards, redneck style! Of course this would need unleaded smoke, though...

Heck, with all the radiators John has, he might have his own little brewery back behind the shed........

I have headers for the 350 (still NIB) that I never installed. Would 350 headers also work on 455s?

Glad I don't have to take a bath at your place
You're right about spring changeout, it would be a breeze now. IF I need to do it. With lighter components on the 455 that might change the playing field a bit
I liked fighting with the springs?? Master Kenobi, you must have been out on the town with Jar Jar Binks last night and been swayed by the dark side......I'm looking for a way to do this without having to changeout the springs.

So a 200R4 is a direct bolt in for the TH350? Just move the cross member to the 400 position? I like the idea that I don't have to touch the driveshaft. It's balanced and runs perfectly.
Pretty much so with the short-tail Turbo-350 and the 200-R4 units, they are about an inch in length with each other, the 200-R4 being the one ever so longer. The parking brake intermediate cable may have to be replaced with one intended for a Turbo-400 equipped car. Bits and pieces but they all come together! Howie

No worries Tony, you can come on down too! We could drive down together! A 'gathering of the clan' next to the bigfoot pit. I know it's a long drive for you, but can't you just smell the 'bacon' sizzlin all ready??? You'd probably need to burn 2 weeks vac to do this though. Had a pig BBQ 2 years ago at my buddy's. It rained all day but that didn't stop us.

Hey, just a reminder that when you do go to the 455, which is an excellent idea by the way. (Did I mention that a 455 marine short block has set in my garage for over 20 years, with the MRS asking "Why don't you sell it?", and me saying, "I just might need it someday"..Someday is right around the corner, probably next winter) Anyway, a 455 will bolt into the engine compartment, but for the correct geometry you should change the frame mounts, lets the engine set a little lower; and you may have to get the right valve covers (they have notches) if you have air and powerbrakes. Im sure there are others who can tell you exactly what you need here for the A-body conversion.

The engine doesn't move it's position when you change the mounts. The crank center line is in the exact same spot with either a small block or a big block. The factory big block mounts had a lock built into them that the factory small block mounts didn't so when the mount broke the engine wouldn't hit the hood.
Also the regular covers fit with power brakes and A/C, but it's just a tight fit.

Thats good to know, although I thought I read somewhere that it changed it the geometry a little. When I was younger, My best friend and I swapped a 455 toro motor into a 72 Cutlass, but no air and no powerbrakes. Unbolt, bolt, no problems. Did the 70-72 BB A-body's come with the cut out valve covers?

Yes. Only the BBO powered 68-72 A-bodies got the notched valve covers.

So if I wanted roller rockers that shouldn't have a problem with stock VCs? I have spare covers if I needed to take out the baffle for clearance. Just didn't know if I needed taller covers. Where is the cover tight - on the PB side or the AC side? I do have PB but no AC. I'm not going for bling on the motor.

I found some of the info I was reading. It was on 442.com in the FAQ's SB/BB swap notes. It says that actual BB mounts would allow the BB to sit an inch lower. Although it was talking more about the top clearance than geometry-my bad... I'm confused though, if the BB does sit an inch lower wouldn't that change the crank plane?

Not really knowing if this is right or wrong, I would suspect the engineers created the center point of the engine taking into account the mounts. That only stands to reason since a TH350, TH375, TH400 and 200R4 will bolt right up, and they have to be in the right orientation to ensure driveline functionality.
