Craigslist 455 Score

During my usual CL searching I came across this 455 for a reasonable price. As we know this is always a risk but I talked to the guy and worked out a deal. I was finally able to pick it up this wknd and took it over to Gene's(64Rockets) shop so we could tear it down and see what exactly I got for my $$. I of course want to thank Gene for spending his Saturday with me at the shop going through this engine and teaching me some things. Story was this engien was rebuilt 5yrs ago for his boat but life got in the way and it never make it on to the lake. So the engine was pulled and stored.

We couldnt explain the mud/sludge in the oilpan because there was no signs of dirt in the motor. Also the rod and main bearing still had the factory coating on them so this engine did have very little run time. So here is what we found.

Serified F block
Speed Pro L2323 .040 pistons .020 in the hole
reconditioned stock rods with APR Bolts
N crank with .020 mains and .030 rods and rotating assembly balanced
Comp Cams 280H Magnum hyd Flat tappet cam 110 lobe sep on 106 intake centerline, Duration @ .050" Lift 230/230, lobe lift .489/.489
Rebuilt Stock E heads with 2.07/1.62 large valves and intake gasket matching and 77CC
Comp Cams double springs, lifters, pushrods, double timing set, rockers/pedestals.
Meling HV oil pump which we repinned for higher pressure
Performer Intake
Davis Unified Ignition HEI non vacuum advance distributor and Livewires plug wires.

The engine was extremely clean inside and I am happy with the purchase. We added Harland Sharp Pedestal Rockers upon reassembly with felpro gasket set. So it works out to 9.9 to 1 compression ratio build. So what power do you think this engine will produce? (I know there is power left on table with the unported heads and one day may get Procomps)I will be running Hooker Super Comp 3101 headers and a 77-79 800cfm qjet. This will be mated to a 700R4 trans and a 3.42 posi rear. What size stall should I run? Are the 3.42's going to keep the engine where it perfrom well or should I go lower like 3.90? Any issue with vacuum for power brakes?

Thanks
Magna

If everything checks out it should be fine running street strip.as for vacume it should be able to pull 12 to 13 inches in gear @ 650 to 700. Plenty for power brakes.342 will be fine but you need a stall converter.it can run without one but you will Leaveing some ET on the table.as for the power around 375 @crank give or take some.ET wise 13.50 to 12.75 with the right combo of parts and weight of car is a factor. I have a similar build with a cam with 230@50 pocket ported small valve heads 350 trans with 2500 stall 3.73 gear.800 Qjet performer headers.in a 71 cutless @3850 .it runs 103 to 105 MPH in 1/4 ET in 12.80 to 13.00. it a street car not optimized for the track .I had it to the track only a few times with some borrowed slicks. if you can get a Qjet from a 77 79 403 recalibrate the idle passages put a power piston spring in the 6 to 8 inch range. take out the stock 73 jet put in a 75 jet with DA secondary rod it will put you close.

Nice acquisition!

I recently tore down the engine in my SX which had very little run time after a rebuild 2 years ago, and it was very similar in condition. Super clean top and bottom end with the exception of some sludge in the pan. The only thing I could attribute it to is petroleum jelly used to pack the oil pickup for initial priming. Don't take this as gospel, though, as I'm a noob on engine internals
