carb help please
I have a 1973 455,,,Well I only have had this car for maybe 3 weeks and I was changing the air filter when i noticed a wire tying of some lever on the choke side of the carb...I took it off and started the car and the lever went up when i pushed on the gas pedal...Which activated the choke plate..The problem is the choke wil not disengage...I looked at pics on the net of the choke and I can tell something is missing on the lever..Where the wire had it tied down it looks like something should be going through the hole......What is missing? Whoever had it before me basically just tied off the lever so the choke is never being used..It always took a extended time for the car to run smooth....If I start the car up with the lever untied and set the choke with the gas pedal,,,,the lever pops up and the car starts to run rich....So now i have it tied back off until i find whats missing....
Classic example of what happens when people who have no business messing with a QuadraJet, do. Now you're paying the price for a previous owner's backyard ingenuity.
There may not be anything missing, and it may only need adjusting. Also possibility someone installed a component in wrong order or backwards during a rebuild.
You need in place:
1) the fast idle screw and cam follower on the carb baseplate. Wedge-shaped thing with a set screw on it. It's down and behind the choke housing.
2) the fast idle cam (what the wire is currently tied thru)
3) a functioning choke thermostat. Take it off its housing and make sure the spring isn't burned thru. If it is there's a deeper problem. It should be set at INDEX position (as it currently is)
4) a functioning choke pulloff (the vacuum thing)
Let us know if this stuff is there, and we can probably walk you thru the adjustments. Also look at the left rear side of the carb and get the numbers off it so we'll know exactly which carb we're dealing with. Should be something like 7043253 or similar.
