Hey y’all know this has been posted before because I have been looking for the answer to my question online but can’t really find it. Just picked up a 85 cutlass with a 455. Was my grandpas and now mine. He swapped a 455 out of a 68 toronado it’s stock except for the hei and headers. Need to either rebuild carb or buy a new one. Looking in some advise on a good carb for it. Currently have the Quadrajet. Wasn’t sure if there was a Holley or something else I could
buy that would work well and something that could be used no and even for future upgrades on the motor.

 

I would rebuild the quadrajet, if you need parts contact Cliffs quadrajets

 

How do you know there is an issue with the current Quad? What are the symptoms? Are the gaskets leaking at the base? At the air horn? Are the metal throttle bushings leaking? Is the accelerator pump sticking? Does it have an electric choke or mechanical choke? Basically in a nutshell - what are the symptoms which leads you to believe the carburetor? The first thing you should do is determine what Quadrajet carburetor is sitting on top of that 68 455. You might very well find the carburetor is not the original carburetor for a 1968 Toronado. Look at the rear left-hand (driver's side) of the carburetor and identify the Rochester Quadrajet carburetor number first. You'll need to determine this first if you're going to rebuild the carburetor.

 

Cliff announced he is not rebuilding anymore, only selling parts. I've only heard good things about Everyday Performance Quadrajets. Got any pictures of the car and engine bay?

 

I’ve only driven it for 10 minutes.. just got it after it’s been sitting for years so before I drive it too much have been going through everything. Carb seems to be leaking fuel from the top of the carb not sure it should be so wet on the carb. The numbers stamped on it are T7057253

hi tex,sparkys carb service out of milwaukee is the guy you want to get in touch with. he only rebuilds Qjets nothing else. he is one of if not the best around. i emailed questions to him and he answered back. had him rebuild my qjet and it has worked flawlessly since.check out his web site.btw i believe he owns a mid sixties toronado

 

If you can visually detect fuel leaking from the top of the carburetor, it most likely needs rebuilding. Sitting for 10 years has probably dried out the gaskets (at least) and at a minimum the gaskets need replacing. Depending on how capable you are, you can buy a rebuild kit and do it yourself. Cliff is a good guy and sells good Quadrajet rebuild kits. He also enjoys talking and discussing your needs.

Are you sure your carburetor has the letter T and is not instead the number 1? If the first four digits are 1705, the manufacture year of that carburetor would be between 1976 - 1979.

I don't believe that carburetor was OEM standard for the 1968 Toronado.

17057253 Rochester Quadrajet is a 1977 model year carburetor

That carburetor would have been used on Buick, Oldsmobile and Pontiac engines.

How to Decode Rochester Quadrajet Carburetor Numbers

Perform a Google search for 17057253. I am not familiar enough with that carburetor to determine any pitfalls and/or benefits to that carburetor, but I would suspect that carburetor might perform fine sitting on top of a 1968 Olds 455. Regarding the jetting parameters, I can't make any judgements as to the fuel metering of this carburetor on this engine. Others with more experience would better assist you.
