Cam Thrust Washer
When using a brass thrust washer between hyd roller cam and front of block, does the block require machining to compensate for washer thickness ?
Note: This question is regarding brass washer, not the Torrington type.
i’m just wanting to be sure the use of brass washer won’t mess up the alignment of distributor gear.

Pretty sure the only time you need to use the washer is if the block has some wear from the flange on the cam. Your supposed to use the same thickness behind the crank gear to keep everything lined up.
As far as the distributor gear, I suppose you could use gear marking paste like what would be used for rear end setup to see how the gears mesh. If your using a bronze distributor gear, those are pretty forgiving and meant to be kinda sacrificial anyway.
There are engine builders who know far more than I do, hopefully one of them can offer some advice.

The thrust washer can be used without machining the block as long as it's not too thick. You should use a spacer on the crank to keep the chain lined up. It's a good idea to use it with a roller cam and button. The washer will prevent additional ware of the block. If you can have a receiver bore machined it's a better option. This way you don't have to use a spacer on the crank and the lobes and gears line up better. If you use crank spacer and want to use the oil slinger it comes close to the cover, best to check.
