Built 455 questions

i am looking at a built 455 for my 71 cutlass and have some questions. Here is what I know about the engine.

ENGINE WAS BORED 0.030 HAS HYPERTECTIC PISTONS, 10/10 NODULAR IRON CRANK WITH ROCKET RODS RESIZED. BLOCK VAT AND BOILED. HEADS COMPLETELY REWORKED WITH TRIPLE ANGLE VALVE JOB, NEW VALVES, SPRINGS, LOCKS, RETAINERS, HEADS TAPPED FOR SCREW IN STUDS. RESTORED MICKEY THOMPSON VALVE COVERS. ROLLER TIME SET AND ROCKERS. 278 DURATION HYDRAULIC CAM AND LIFTERS.NEW PARTS THAT COMES WITH IT ARE NEW HOOKER COMP HEADERS, TORKER ALUMINUM INTAKE, MSD DUEL POINT DISTRIBUTER, NEW HOLLEY 870CFM DOUBLE PUMPER CARBURATOR.( NEVER HAS HAD GAS RUN THROUGH IT) NEW WATER PUMP STILL IN BOX ALONG WITH NEW HARMONIC BALENCER NEW FLYWHEEL, NEW STARTER, GASKETS

Block is a 1974. J heads. Intake and heads port matched. Double roller all balanced 10.5-1 Pistons.

What kind of numbers do you think this set up will produce? Also can it run on 91 or 92 octane? Any other suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Maybe it's just me, but when I hear the term built engine, I expect something other than a stock rebuild with high compression cast pistons, cam, and bolt-ons.

I suspect the person advertising it doesn't know a lot about engines and is just repeating what someone else told him or her.
  • the correct term is hypereutectic, and it's nothing to brag about
  • rocket rods is meaningless except probably to say they are stock, soft Olds rods
There are no serious go-fast parts in that engine description.

If you are getting it for a good price it could be a fun engine with decent performance but it's not a built engine.

X2, and who uses dual point distributors anymore? What's the asking price?
And FYI, Holley doesn't make an 870 dbl pump carb.

Yes I agree I should have said re built. I am basically getting it for no cash out of pocket other than the 150 in gas it will take me to drive there and back. I am trading a Yamaha Raptor 125 ATV for it. I'm just trying to see what all I will need to do in addition as far as transmission, rear end ratio, etc. the car is for my 14 yr old, soon to be 15, so I don't want anything with 500 HP so he can burn the tires off it every weekend lol.

If it was assembled correctly then go ahead. And yes you'll be far from 500hp.

Well assuming it was put together correctly, and I can get the right carb set up for it, I was guessing it may come in around 375-400 HP. Even if it's less than that, say 350, and I go to a 4 speed with OD transmission, and a posi rear with 3.55 or 3.73 gears, he will think he's driving a rocket compared to wha it is now with the stock worn out 350 and no posi with highway gears. Also with the 10.5 to 1 Pistons will I be able to just run regular 91 octane pump gas?
