Block ID HELP!!
Block ID HELP!!
Who can decode these pics? Its an F block(68'-72') with C(68') heads, that looks virgin. It should have the last 6 digits of the VLN, the year it was made, and the assembly plant. The code doesn't quite line up. Enlighten me please.
Block stamp Below Driver Side Cylinder Head: 39M174334
Oil Filler Neck Stamp: 9159468

The number stamped on the pad on the block indicates the engine is an Oldsmobile (3), built for a 1969 model year vehicle (9) at the Lansing plant (M), and was originally installed in a vehicle with the last six numbers of it's VIN matching the last six digits of the block stamping (174334).
The number stamped on the oil fill tube is the engine's identification number that was used internally by Olds to track the engine in the plants and into it's assigned vehicle. The only digit of significance there is the first one, 9, which indicates it's a 1969 engine - assuming the tube hasn't been changed between engines. These numbers did not match the vehicle's VIN. Hope this helps - Don

I see a '69 455
C heads were used '68-69
A good start to any build.
check the rear face of the crank for a notch in the OD, about 2 fingers wide. If the flexplate is there it will be hard to see the notch but you can feel it.
