I'm not much of a car guy (that gene skipped me), but my grandmother recently mentioned that my (late) auto-mechanic grandfather has an aluminum Oldsmobile engine in the garage, she only knew a few details that Grandpa wanted to put it into a vehicle but never quite got around to it, and that it was something GM experimented with and didn't really work out. The engine appears to be a V8 via my counting of spark plugs.
She was offered 100$ for the engine by the Culligan man, I told her it's probably worth that in scrap metal, but it sounded like something uncommon if the story is accurate. So I snapped a few pictures and thought to look for a forum just like this to see what people might have to say about it. So, rel
It's stamped with "OI1562665" and "HI246626" searching these didn't get me very far, but a bit of digging brought me here.
That's a Buick 215, used in the 1961-63 Buick Skylark and Special and also in the 1961-62 Pontiac Tempest. The manual trans bellhousing (and presumably flywheel under it) is worth at least $250 by itself. If the engine is complete and turns over by hand, the rest of it is probably worth $100-200 as a core. The Olds 215 is the same basic engine with unique heads and valvetrain.
Thanks for the info Joe, it's very much appreciated to know what we've got. We're not that far from Detroit, so I wanted to rule out that this wasn't something special that had made it's way into Grandpa's garage.
