Advice on Heads

I am going to rebuild the 1973 455 that I bought for my 70 Cutlass. Not wanting to get wild radical. Just wanting 350-400 hp and the magic 500 ftlbs of torque. My motor has the J heads. Can I get there from here or do I spend a little and get K,G,? Im on a budget so any help would be appreciated.

Pretty much ANY other BBO heads would be a better choice, unless you plan to get the J heads ported and have big valves installed. Of course, by the time you pay for that, it would be cheaper to get aftermarket aluminum heads.

J is for for Junk.

You will spend a butt load of cash to get them to begin making power. Better off with a set of big valve C heads or aluminum.

I have a set of large valve c heads complete 3 angle valve job,egr bumps ground down, and they have Harland sharp s50026a roller rockers. They have less than 1000 miles on them.
Over reved my g block 400 and spun a connecting rod bearing. Also have performer intake and 750 electric choke edelbrock carb from the same engine.i would have to pull it all off the engine that's still in car. Your in Texas and I'm in Connecticut,I never shipped anything this big or heavy. I'm going to build a 455 and most likely will be going with edelbrock heads.

Actually, A.I.R. bumps, since EGR was on the intake manifold and was not used before the 1973 model year.

The cast bumps in the intake tracts where the AIR nozzles would be threaded in, if the car had had AIR.

The bumps are in the exhaust ports or tracks as you call them.

Consider Fastenal for shipping heavy stuff like iron heads

Fastenal, the bolt and nut people, have started accepting fairly large and heavy items for shipment between their stores. Rates are way better than truck freight or UPS/FedEx. If there is a Fastenal store anywhere near you and the place you may be shipping you might give them a call. I understand it is a space available and may take a few days more than UPS. Wouldn't hurt to give them a call and check. You can also locate their stores on the Internet. I've also had good luck with Greyhound Bus Freight but again it is not door to door but is a lot less than the big guys.

I have no connection with either fastenal or greyhound so nothing in it for me.

Yeah, duh. Thanks Gene. Brain fart. Of course AIR blows into the exhaust, not the intake.

A.I.R. blowing in the intake would be called supercharging.
