73 455 edelbrock 1407 750 carb throttle issue

My throttle return spring has to be pulled very far out and tight for the car to idle at a low RPM and now it’s stretching my spring out as a result and starting to idle higher. Any suggestions as to what the problem could be and best bet for fixing it? Thanks for any help.

How old is the carb? It could be wear in the primary throttle shafts.

Disconnect the throttle cable and see if the problem goes away. If it does your cable is either too short or you need to somehow adjust the cable bracket for more freeplay in the cable with the throttle closed.

not very old. Previous owner barely used it and looked clean when I picked it up.

A picture can help too.

i know the ebrock uses a different type of fastener cable to the carb VS a qjet.

I had a similar problem with a Holley on a 327 Chevy, Like you I initially put a mondo return spring but it was a pain in my leg to drive, literally. Its been a long long time but if I remember, the throttle linkage was slightly binding on the intake. What I would suggest is with the engine off, remove the return spring(s) and throttle cable, and the kickdown cable if there is one, and slowly open and shut the throttle, feeling for any binding. Barring none, then put on the cable and have a helper press on the accelerator pedal while you have your hand on the linkage feeling for any binding.
