Another morning in the garage and I got the second head de-valved and cleaned up the valves

so whats the best way to de-grease the heads...let them soak in.a big pail of parts cleaner??

I also removed the crank...I numbered all the crank bearings and and measured the crank...here are the measurements of the crank with my verniers from back to front.....are they in spec......forgive me, i have my olds service manual in the mail!!
image-2_zps287b1a3a.jpg

1. 3.003"
2. 2.997"
3. 2.997"
4. 2.998"
5. 2.999
keep in mind it was measured with my verniers...so it might be off a hair!!

I still have two oil plugs to get out of the rear of the block....one allen key style that I kinda striped. boy is it in there tight...might leve that one for the machine shop!! The other is the square one which i have no tool for at the moment....but all in all its moving along nicely..

I hope to drop the heads ang block off at a machine shop this week..is it highly recomended to have the block and heads decked on a rebuild???

I made a tool for the square plug out of a socket extension and it worked great!!

Im now wondering how does one go about removing the dowl pins that line up the heads......kinda need to remove them to have the block machined do I not???

Yes, but instead of being either 3/8" or 1/2", it's 5/16".

The machine shop can do that without chewing any up but that can of double d forty and some heat and a small channel lock with twisting should work i remember chewing some up before but i just put the chewed end in the block...but now i cant remember if that was an olds block

I did have a propane torch i could have used to heat it up i guess,,,,it was the hardest plug/bolt ive ever had to remove!!

So the pins and cam bearings I think I will leave for the machine shop to remove!! I hope to get some pricing from a few different shops this week and hope to get a start on this!!!

Good luck at the machine shop...if you bring any lose parts make sure they write everything down so nothing gets lost

Great work so far! Engine looks to be in very good shape.
One can see why I did not pull the engine in the underhood reso i did 1.5 years back - it could have ended up in a rebuild.

So I guess it is too late to sell you an anti-MAW hat?

It looks to have a newer solenoid...I will put up pics later!!
Is there a rebuild kit I can buy from napa???

Roger,
Haven't been on here much lately with curling taking up a lot of my time lately. Very cool to see you progressing with the starter. Do the full mean documentation on it with plenty of pics. I am planning to pull mine and rebuild it in the spring so anything I learn from you will be bonus!

Sorry I don't have anything to give you on the cam. Maybe post the specs for others to look at?

This is the first time for me rebuilding one Al ....so I might not be the best teacher.....I went to remove the retainer clip/ring above the gear tonight and it shot across the DAAAAAAAM garage somewhere...spent 40 min looking for it and its still out in space somewhere...lol .....I hope its in the rebuild kit!!!!!!!

To be honest there's not much to the starter!!

LOL Roger, that's too funny!

Yup, most of the time it's just to replace the bushings and brushes then slap er back together. I did one years ago on my 83 Regency under the guidance of my neighbor who was a mechanic. That's a long time ago though but the parts look familiar. With new bushings it might feel a little tight going back together IIRC.

Well getting a little bored waiting for the engine at the machine shop and wanted to be in the garage, so I decided to make a tool to install the cam!!

I know its nothing special and some guys dont even use one but..why buy it when you can make it right!!

Great job on the starter!
It sure doesn't sound like much when not under load - this is the first time I heard one run off the car... Great test setup.
Did you find the clip that flew off? When i move and clear out the garage, i will surely find piles of hardware that have launched themselves into the unknown...

Roger, the price of everything is going up. Where did you buy the parts from? I've found that doing a 'bulk order' from one location helps cut down the financial rape that goes on with shipping and customs a bit.

Did you order pistons yet?

Get rid of that overpriced hot rod rotor and get a normal rotor that screws right to the advance unit.

No, it's not 'norman', ( ) neither is is 'normal'. Here's a vid showing how it should have been installed.
