´69 400cui pinging ???
I just remembered something I have run into several times. I your car has the stock air cleaner, make sure the heat riser flap in the snorkel is not stuck in hot air mode. If it is stuck in the hot air position you are pulling your air charge right off of the exhaust manifold. I am thinking the air would be in the 300 to 400 degree range. This will create all kinds of problems. Just a thought.
So, I finally got some time during christmas to pull the engine. We found a blown head gasket on the right cylinder side, blown out between cylinder 4 and 6. There is no doubt in my mind that this is the culprit of my troubles of pinging issues.
Nevertheless I pulled the engine to give it a overall check up and replace bearings and piston rings.
The engine has been done once befores and is bored 0,40. It looks amazingly clean on the inside and my local machine shop will get it as soon as posible. I want him to verify that crank and block is ok before overhauling it.

If the gasket was blown out you would have had more problems than pinging.
You would have a terrible engine miss and two dead cyl's. Probably an over heating problem.
pinging is from to much timing, to much carbon build up or bad/low octain gas, too much compression for the gas used.
