64 394 Spit Bearings?

Hello. I know that the connecting rods on my 394 engine have "spit holes" to help lubricate the adjacent cylinder. Are these a necessity? Many new manufacturers make connecting rod bearings without these holes. Almost all including Sealed Power, Mahle Clevite and Egge do not make bearings with the spit function. My sealed power ones do not have it.

Guy,
I wouldnt worry about it. The later Olds rods did away with the spit holes anyway. Pontiac is the same way.

If you feel like you want the spit function you can add it. Just clamp the bearing in the rod as it would run and drill out the bearing's spit hole with an appropriately sized drill through the spit hole in the rod..

If you did that you would be drilling a hole through the rod bolt

I apologize. I made the "assumption" that the '64 394's spit hole was like some other engines.

It appears that I was in error. I should learn not to make assumptions. They can be treacherous. More research is to be preferred.
