455 W30 build
#42
I are truck driver, I wish I was that qualified😁. I do have Year One Autotech and shop experience, I could do all the shitty work🤔. It would make Mark look even more like an Olds guru. Hell, if he does it in Winter, I will get a passport😉. Interesting, the filled heads really make a difference.

For everyone, F heads only have an opening on one exhaust, not two. So the loss of scavenging isn’t quite as bad.
I have another 455 going together right now, sane year but not a W30. But we filled the heads the same way F’s are filled, should make decent power/tq.
And again for everyone, Christian (Olds 307 and 403) was nice enough to send me some Sanderson shorties to test. However I only took them out of the box yesterday and was sorely disappointed. Quality was not good, unusable until their current form.

You don't know why he chooses not to do that. You're starting those passive aggressive statements again.
I've read some of your other posts and am impressed with what you have done. You have nothing to prove, so don't act like you do.
Again, this is not ROP--drama is not considered a benefit here.

Very happy to see you back to testing. Your numbers this time around seems credible, although it would be nice to see more data to determine how the numbers were arrived at on your next build. The W-30 build 442 dude posted was very close in power to yours, and I know the builder of that engine, he does a good job on the rebuilds, a drag racer himself.

I’m not posting Dyno data for you. You’ve proved that you have no idea what you’re looking at anyway.
And again I don’t care who’s a drag racer or not, doesn’t matter to me.
Back to topic, shorty headers.

Well if you ran a shorty header, its probably because I can't even get my head around wasting my time like that, I've never had a shorty header on my dyno. That would explain the small HP gain. If you would have put up a decent picture I wouldn't have even had to ask. So I will assume it was a shorty header. Just trying to participate in your thread.

When we tested W/Z manifolds with 2.5" downpipes against Hooker super comp headers on my engine (might have been 2" primaries, can't remember), it was about 10-11 lb-ft gain at 3,700 rpm, the peak power picked up 13 hp and moved up 100 rpm.
The shape of the curve from 3,700-5,100 was pretty much the same, just shifted up. Based on the curve, the headers would have hung power out past peak a lot better, but I didn't care enough to do a bunch of testing - car was getting manifolds regardless of the results.
From what I've seen, when you run a small-ish cam with wide LSA, the gains to headers just aren't as impressive.
EDIT: I should add, I also read the article that was posted... I'm not surprised at the results. They put a 4 speed W30 cam in the engine, those are 328* advertised, around 244*/244*@0.050 on a 110LSA. It was meant to be a header cam from the factory. I get a kick out of all the 4 speed W30 guys talking a big game as having the "big dog" Olds engine when it has the stock manifolds on it.

Good info thanks.
But actually I did an aluminum headed 375 small block a few years ago and picked up over 30 and 30 from 4000rpm up with headers vs manifolds. And that had a smallish cam in it(221/228@.050 on a 112) but I think the entire intake and exhaust tracts were in sync with headers.

Mark, this is why I want the Thornton headers tested on your 350 mule. I know they will make less hp/tq than the full length but I say, once those Sanderson headers are fixed they will make a measurable gain over 2 1/8" outlet Thornton 350 JR manifolds.

[QUOTE=cutlassefi;1328605]Whst did I describe and what did the picture show? Like I said, apparently you have a learning disability of some sort, very sorry for that.[/QU
Apparently you described what the pictures showed. I should pay more attention, I very much appreciate your concern over my perceived learning disability. I guess I didn't have much interest in your small pictures and didn't pay much attention to them, my mistake. You probably have your reasons for the pictures being so small, not much can be seen. As you know when I post pictures of my engine builds you can get right up on them and see whats been done, I would encourage you to do the same. On a positive note: its nice to see you post some very realistic dyno HP/TQ numbers for a change, I'am quite sure the engine builders in the Oldsmobile community will greatly appreciate that. Nice work!
