455 street/ strip motor build

Hi, looking for some ideas on what would be the best combination for building my engine. I am starting with a '71 Toronado engine. I want to keep the build streetable, as it will see more cruising than track time, but I also want to have something that could be run at the track. I was thinking of a mid 9 compression ratio with .03 forged pistons . I am planning on using the repop W-30 intake , quadrajet, and wz exhaust manifolds with 2 1/2 pipes. I would appreciate some help on selecting the best cam for this engine. The engine will be going into a '72 cutlass coupe.

my opinion

Skip the repo W-30 aluminum intake & put a Performer on it. You will need to decide on gear ratio, tire size & converter when picking your cam so that you have a well balanced driveline.

??Turbo 400 with heavy duty sprag and shift kit would be enough for the tranny. 2800 stall converter go with a lift on cam around 496 maybe a tad more. Use H/S roller rockers. As oldsmobiledave said get a performer intake. Then this motor will be in the twelves and streetable.JMO

Might as well go with a normal build that is bored .030-.060 over, find a nice modular crank that doesn't need much work and find yourself a good set of moderately worked iron heads or try and find some used aluminum heads. Go with a good set of refurbished oem rods unless you want excess of 500hp and decent forged Pistons in the 10:1 range. You might as well take advantage of today's technology and use a custom ground hydraulic roller hydraulic cam and valvetrain. Top it with a performer or performer rpm and get an electronic ignition by msd and you should have a nice street/strip engine!

How would I go about selecting the proper size for a hydraulic roller cam? Is one manufacturer better than the other? This is going to be my first time going into a build using one and I am trying to learn so I don't end up with a mismatched mess. My projected specs for my 455 will be arias forged pistons (compression around 9.5-9.6), reconditioned stock rods, total seal rings , large valve g iron heads (some bowl work and polished) stock nodular crank . I am looking to get around 450hp out of the build.

sorry if this seems redundant , I am just wanting to build this engine correctly and don't want to blow a whole lot of money on the wrong parts.

To get the best cam, contact Mike Jones or fill out the cam recommendation sheet (easy), and he'll send you the proper cam specs. Good luck.

Cutlassefi is building mine currently. I'm sure he will update the progress on here. It's a 550+ hp build. I'd call or message him and you could dial my combo down a few notches for A good streetable engine!
