455 project starting and moving along
Hello to the forum, I have all but completed the teardown of a 455 purchased September 2011. The forum has been very helpful and gracious with welcoming me to the fold and it is very much appreciated. I would like to share the ongoing story of but one chapter involving my Oldsmobile. Hopefully as time and funds will allow, this 1971 offering of a 455 will be finding a home under the hood of the car. The engine looks to be in decent shape, serviceable, but nothing can be taken for granted after reading and seeing what was with Allan's '73 455. The fellow who I purchased this engine from has had it for 15 years in a shed, it was a 'cut-out from a salvage vehicle, he put oil into the cylinders, and it did crank over when I went to see it. But rusty coolant did spill out of the engine when it was tilted, so an inspection will be done at the machine shop to ensure there are no cracks. It would be a shame, as there are no wear ridges to be seen/felt at all, but if need be a sleeve or two will be fitted. I am not sure of the cost, does anybody in the forum have experience with this? Included are some pictures taken of some of the parts and the block. Everything is seen as it was, no cleaning or anything done, save for a light oil now applied to the cylinders to prevent light rust dusting as already was happening, the garage is dry, but not heated, and bare cast iron, well it is known what happens to it....Who knows where this adventure will end up! Regards, Howie
