455 Olds Value

I have an F code 455 motor and I'm not sure what it should sell for. It is complete with the exception of a carb and ac compressor. The motor does need to be rebuild, does anyone have an idea of what it's worth.

What letter are the heads? If original to the block that will ID the year of the 455. You might be able to get 500 for an early 455 in rebuildable condition.

Location may play into it as well. Depends on demand.

This is true, im near Indy and theres a guy trying to sell two 455s right now for pretty cheap and nobodys biting. Olds 350s are going for a lot more than 455s around here for some reason and again, nobodys biting :/

Interested to know the story on this one though, location, heads and such. It'd be the large letter stamped near the front on the side of the driver side head (or rear on the side on passenger) theyre pretty big and hard to miss.

400.00 tops on an auto core with J heads more with manual crank. I found a machine shop fresh 455 with forged pistons, rebuilt J heads, another 455 core with headers, carbs intake and manual flywheel for 3000.00 I almost bought it . Id rather work with my machinist and do it exactly the way I want it.

No offense but i would not buy a core 455 with J heads and an auto crank for anywhere near $400. For $400 id expect at least C heads and a manual crank or no deal. Maybe its just the area im in but thats what id expect out of that kinda price. If the J head motor ran it might be considerable, but as a core, no way. Even that rebuilt 455 you speak of is a stretch at $3000, depending on what was in it. If it had some high comp aftermarket pistons, a sweet cam, headers, an Edelbrock Performer, Holley carb, and block work with manual crank, sure $3000 might work. Any less than that and that price is quite a stretch.

Not trying to bash on your post but thats the going rate around here anyway, Cali may be quite different in their prices. Around here a J-head core from intake to oil pan is a $200 item at best, i bought my Ga head/auto crank core complete minus intake, carb, and manifolds for $100, and it had Cutlass notched valve covers on it

Complete, well running Ga headed 455 for $350. But again, area does affect the price. Olds is pretty plentiful around here

2 posts, and I didn't see you asking on this site. There are threads on here that tell you exactly where to find the serial number that will tell you what year it is.

E heads are 1970 heads, but they may not be original to the block.

look on the pad near the front drivers side of the block just below the head. There will be a vin deritive number stamped there that might shed more light on the year of the block.

The only way to know the year of the block for sure is to check the VIN derivative stamp. The second character is the model year. In the photo below, the "2" in the second position is 1972 model year.
