Where to look for a 455?
Need abit of help, looking for a 455 here in virginia. Wondering if yall had some tips of what to avoid, look for and all that. Also how much should i expect to pay for one? This is only my 3rd time motor hunting and first time looking for an olds motor. Also whats a quick and easy way to tell a 455 from the other olds motors?
Thanks

Seriously, I've found most of mine from Craigslist. I also bought a complete 455 short block at Carlisle a year or so ago. If you have the room, the least expensive thing to do is to buy a rusty Olds full size, pull the motor, and junk the rest.
Telling a 455 is easy. The casting number on the small shelf above the water pump (where the oil fill tube is located) is 396021 F or 396021 FA.
i find my 455s under the hood.
i have one that is all apart and will need bored. i think .30 will get it fresh. i am in Indiana. i do not have an intake or exhaust manifolds. i would take $250 for it. i do not know off the top of my head what heads it has. i do know that they are not H, D, F, C, or Ga. if interested PM me.

They're on Craigslist all the time here too. They seem to be pretty common in this area. I've had a bunch of guys at the cruises try to sell or give them to me when I take the Vista out. I know I should grab them but I have no room for storage and enough pots on the fire now.

Get a whole Chebby with this one, looks a lot like a 350 with the gold paint but I can't tell the difference looking at the pic. If the car body is good or has enough good parts to sell it could be a deal and at least pay for itself.

I picked up a 71 455 with E heads on Craigslist last summer for $200 and it runs great, The guy said it was rebuilt. I pulled the crank out to get it drilled for a slick and it does look to be rebuilt.
I went with a friend to pick up a 455 a couple weeks back in a small town. It was about a 200 mile round trip but it was a complete 71 98 motor for $125.

jensen, I would love to take you up on your offer, but cant afford boring/rebuild atm. Just looking for a stock 455 to get me through the 4 years of college. I dont mind driving abit to get it, but I dont think joe was joking when he said he bought all the 455's in VA
