455 intake swap parts list or advice
I'm getting ready to swap a Edelbrock dual plane onto my 1974 Olds 455, in a 77 cutlass. I'm also replacing the existing 600CFM Edelbrock, with a reman Q-jet (remanned and sold by Holley for a 1974 455)
The engine was professional rebuilt in 2007, and has about 3000 miles on it. It runs like a clock, but I want to lose the weight of the cast iron manifold, and I feel the 600 carb is starving this motor for fuel.
I will also be removing the crossover plugs, which have rattled since day one.
I need intake gaskets, and water neck gaskets. I plan on replacing the lower rad hose while I'm there. What else should I replace?

which manifold?
I am also going with an edelbrock performer with a q-jet, had to get the elctronic choke set up for it. so you may need to look into that or a manual choke if it doesn't have a provision for the factory choke.

It looks like Edelbrock only recommend their gaskets for the swap. No real surprise I guess, but at least they are affordable. They recommend RTV for the end seals, and only provide the intake to heads gaskets.

You can find a million different opinions on our website about which intake manifold gasket to use. IMHO, the turkey tray is hard to use. I've had the best luck with a 4 piece intake manifold gasket. 2 rails (1 front, and 1 back), and 2 sides (left and right). I use RTV at each of the corners.
You said you are replacing the lower radiator hose. If you are replacing that then why not replace the upper radiator hose as well?

The hoses are only three years old (about 3000 miles), but the lower one has been damaged.
I never liked the turkey tray all that much. Does Fel pro have a gasket set that people like? Is theirs a 4 piece?

observe and practice the correct tightening sequence of the intake bolts.
good advice given, pitch the front and rear seals and lay down a 1/4" bead of RTV.
would you expect Edlebrock to recommend anything besides their own gaskets?
Fel Pro Gaskets are as good as any on the market

When you remove the intake you will also have to remove the heater core shut off valve. This valve is about $30 new at the parts store. You can either replace it or use it again if you can get it off of the iron intake without damaging it. I suggest you soak it with PB Blaster for a good week before trying to remove it.

Thanks for the heater core shutoff valve tip. I started soaking it this weekend.
I FOUND MY ELECTRIC CHOKE! I guess it pays to clean you garage once in awhile. It was in a box full of Pontiac Rally wheel center caps.
NEW LIST:
Edelbrock intake gaskets,
water filler neck(thermostat housing) gasket
lower rad hose
new hard fuel line for q jet
new water temp sending unit
new shutoff valve (maybe)
Black RTV for the front and back

Mr. Gasket 404 paper intake gasket.I get mine from Loper's, locally.
Indian head, or permatex around the water ports, gaskacinch around intake ports.
Indian head holding the rubber end seals-top and bottom, and it will never leak on you.
Forget the turkey tray, unless you want to cut off the intake runners, and bolt it down above the cam.

I'll keep learning, but it looks like right now I'm not doing anything until I replace my TH350. Second gear let go yesterday on the way home from looking at a 77 Supreme for sale. Almost like it was jealous.... Hmmm.
I have a thread started in the transmission section about my slushbox issues.

I realize this is an old post. But for future reference. I used ultra black before, today I am redoing my intake gaskets and called permatex, the guy that answered told me that ultra grey #82194 has a higher tack and tensile strength than ultra black. He also suggested using a small thin bead of perma shield #85420 around the ports just outside of were the ports are , just to ensure gas and or oil doesn't degrade the the ultra grey or ultra black as fast if you still decide to use ultra black. black is better than cpper but the gray is better than black. even if you use gaskets that have the blue ring around the ports still apply a small line outside of the blue line but inside the ultra grey our black. He also recommended to seal your threads with thread sealer.#56521

"He also recommended to seal your threads with thread sealer.#56521"
Water neck and heater valve could use sealer.
INTAKE to head bolts are blind and need only oil.
I see that overlooked is a crucial step
DRY TEST FIT to make sure everything is good before applying sealers.
