Question 455 Help!!!

I can get a newer 455 but all the research I have done has concluded that the 1970 and older models are the best for H.P... Should I go for the newer or wait for the older. Also what can be done for adding extra performance and stopping prob's with cam. Are there any other common prob's I should be aware of?? This motor will go into my 69 Cutlass used for mostly street but WILL GO TO THE TRACK AT LEAST ONE TIME BEFORE I DIE!!!!!!!!!!!
any info will help please give me anything you got Thanks ahead of time.

Oil press is the big thing with all olds engine's as far as the HP I think you can do just as much with that engine as you can with the older ones . GMO

the older 455 blocks68-71 are a better block as for as stregth because they have more nickle count in them which makes them harder.
my preference for the moter is 68-69 toro's and all the big cars in the to years alot of them have the big valve heads the toro's are supost to have a the goodies in it heads cranks high compresion and all the hp and torque.

Well the toro's motor has the components as a 442's motor. So yes high compresion higher nickle content better crank, rods, cam, ect.

"c" heads can have two intake valve sizes
1 two barrel motors had a 2.00" dia. intake valve
2 four barrel motors had 2.077" dia. intake valve

Brian, where are you located? I'm in Medford Oregon and I have 9 or 10 F block 455's (pre 1972 I believe) Are you anywhere near my part of the country?

Any of the 68/76 455 blocks are fine. When you rebuild it with aftermarket pistons and cam for a street car, you would not notice a difference.
The mains need restrictors and I restrick the lifter bores, but not mandatory, others use restricked pushrods.
Do not use a high volume oil pump with a stock pan. Use the heavy duty pump with stock pan.
Any of the OLDS heads will work fine for the street. Big valve or small valve on the street/strip car is no big thing. Big valves can be put into small valve heads, simple job. Once you do some port work on any of the heads, they are all about the same. The "J" heads are the worst ones, but they can be worked, and work very nice on a street/strip car.
Any 455 block, aftermarket pistons, Zero deck, reworked rods, nice balance job, some work over heads, a 230/236@50 .550 lift cam, adjustable rockers, good intake, good Q-jet or holley 700 or 750 and you are in buisness

Gene, thanks for the input, sounds like solid advice. BTW, welcome to our site, you should introduce yourself on the thread "what do you do?". Your car is familiar, have I seen it someplace else, maybe on a different site?
