Hello everyone. I have a '79 Trans Am that has had the 403 replaced with a '74 455. I am getting a nice set of G heads ready for when I freshen up the motor, replacing the J heads. G heads are from '71, and I am having a difficult time finding correct valves, unless I want to go with Manley Severe Duty at $40 each. My exhaust valves are 1.625, with 45 degree angle, and intakes are 2.075 with 30 degree angle. The only matched sets I have found are from Qualcast, and I know nothing about them. Ferrea makes intakes, but not exhaust. Any ideas? Thanks!

So you need 30* 2.07 intakes, is that what you’re asking?
These valves are probably not something you will find other than through your machine shop. They are very high quality stock type replacement valves. I just finished a set of heads with them.
[QUOTE=cutlassefi;1222403]Then you might want to inform Edelbrock of that, as they're one of their valve suppliers.[/QUOTE
I can't concern myself with what Edelbrocks doing, all their work has to be reworked as well. I would imagine if SI does supply valves to Edelbrock they probably have a spec they have to meet. See I like valve stems to be round and strait and consistent so I can set the clearance to the correct spec. I've spent a lot of money on my head operation to get the results I'm looking for, and SI valves are counter productive to achieving those results. I actually ck the valves.

I’m happy for you, I check everything as well. But you do mostly big block Chevy’s, so that’s what you’re going to run across. SI gets different valves from different parts of the world, Argentina, Brazil, New Zealand, etc.
Maybe the ones you got weren’t right, but I KNOW they can provide good ones as well. But as usual you clump everything together for no real reason.
And Edelbrocks issue is typically tight guides and a very simple cut on the seats, not sure what that has to do with valve quality when they’re all the same size.

Post up some pictures of your valve checking equipment, I'd like to see what you use? I've run a machine shop for 27 years, I've seen valves for all types of engines, SI is in Simi Valley, next to Thousand Oaks, it was very easy to go over there and get what I needed, more often than not the quality was not up to my standard, usually stem problems. It all comes down to the type of work you want to do. Maybe things have changed over there? Post up some pictures of what you use to ck valve dimensions.
You will find Manley, Ferrea, and Victory are quality valve suppliers, along with CHE for guides and seats.
I like to be able to control ALL the machine work..............thats why I do it all myself.
Do you set size on valve guides yourself? Do you cut seats yourself? If not how do you ck the work?

I work very closely with Champion Race Heads, who casts all their own heads. Our criteria is no less stringent than yours.
Have I had problems before with SI Valves? Yes and I went elsewhere for awhile. However I’ve also had problems over the years with other major manufacturers as well.
My point is don’t lump them together. Everyone has had issues at some point. That’s why you check them right? If you thought they were going to be perfect every time you wouldn’t have to do that now would you.
Ask your Buick V6 buddies about Champion, they’ll tell you all about it.
What does Champion Racing Heads have to do with "your" capabilities, just sayin. I've machined and built way more Olds than Buicks, actually I've only built (1) Buick.
