455 Flywheel
455 Flywheel
Good evening. I have a 1970 455. I need a flywheel. Can anyone point me in the right direction to a company on-line to buy one. Having a hard time finding the right one. From what I can tell, needs to be an early 455 flywheel. Or, if anyone has a good used one for sale that would be good too. Appreciate any help. Thank you!
First, do you really mean flywheel for a manual trans or flexplate for an automatic? The crank flange bolt pattern changed in 1968. 1964-67 motors use one pattern, 1968-90 use another. Unless your 455 was put together with a 425 crankshaft, it uses the later style flexplate/flywheel.
Thank you for the reply! I am going with a four speed. So, after a flywheel. I have just read that the flywheel for 68 - 73 (?) is what I need not one for clear up to the mid 80's. Having a hard time finding the correct one. Definitely not against to a used one that I can have resurfaced but having no luck with that either. If anyone knows what company I can order the correct one from or has a good used one I would buy it. Appreciate the help.
Was the engine originally for an automatic transmission ? Just want to add that if your crankshaft is not machined for a pilot bushing you will need to have that done also. There is a conversion bushing made that fits where the torque converter would normally go in but that still needs either the crankshaft or transmission input shaft to be modified.

Here is one from RAM on Summit.

I sort of looks expensive at first but if you find a decent used one for $100 and then pay someone $100 to grind it, the $320 is really not that bad.
The only thing I would suggest if you buy an aftermarket one of any type is to have it checked for the proper "unbalance" If you have your original flexplate it can be compared to that. Sad to say that some of the ones I have seen lately here have been quite a bit off from what they are supposed to be.
