I recently purchased my first Olds a 69 442, so here is what I have, casting # 396021 F. I do not see a 2 letter code on the oil filler tube. On the heads is the letter G and I see 409 100. From what I can gather this may be a 1971 455? I'm not sure what car it came out of, are there any other numbers I can look for to determine this?
Below the G on the drivers side is a pad w a partial vin. That will give you a clue what the engine came out of. It does spear to be a 71 455 assuming the heads and block came together.
yes as you are aware the heads are 71 G heads, the casting # 396021 for the year 455 it came out of
can be deciphered just by your pic of the casting you provided; with the font or Sherrif syle F after the casting. casting "F "with sheriff or legs on the F is a 1971 casting.
a 70 455 has a plain F and the 72 and up have a Fa following the casting.
you can further verify year by checking the partial vin on the eng stamp pad.
