455 done.

20160703_182508.jpg

Here's my 455 I recently finished building. It's a 71 block with mildly ported G heads, Erson cam, nodular crank, high volume pump, Kevko 7 qt pan, Edelbrock intake, Scorpion rockers, and forged pistons w/ 10 to 1 compression. I'm putting a 200 4r with a 3000 stall behind it along with the 3.42 gears for now. I am also waiting on my Hooker Competition headers. This is going in my 71 post coupes Cutlass. I'll be taking it to TLC restorations in Milton Wisconsin for some dyno time soon.

Yea, that is nice and clean. My favorite moment in the car hobby is firing the engine for the first time. Anticipation of dyno day would get me no sleep.

Scrappie, cam is somewhere in the. 504 lift and .236 duration. I don't have the card nearby. Carb is a Holley 750 vacuum secondary. Distributor is a billet hei from Rock auto.

Well no dyno. Shop said their dyno requires a crank drilled for a pilot bearing. I called another shop to see if they can do it.

TH400 should be ready next week. I'm having B and C transmission out of Machesney Park Illinois build it for me. I'm gonna forgo the dyno and just put the motor on a test stand this Sunday to check for leaks and overall condition.

Pakes did the machine work on the motor (block bored/honed, crank polished, head work). I assembled it after getting it back a few weeks ago.

Bought a dipstick and tube for the 400 from Inline tube. Fits great with the bracket lining up with the bellhousing bolt. Quality is good too. Also ordered an aluminum Summit Racing performance fit radiator. I've got my old brass 3 row available if anyone is interested. No leaks just decided to try aluminum for the 455.

Ok so the motor is in, however now I've got a starting issue. Fully charged 1000 cca battery ( tested at 12.78 volts), motor grounded from back of cylinder head to clean, sanded part of frame, and motor won't even crank over. No clicking of solenoid either. Starter is brand new Powermaster mini. Motor started and ran fine on test stand.

When I open the door, the dome light turns on. If I turn the headlights on, the dome light turns off. Oh and the headlights never come on either. I also don't have any dash lights at any time during this.

Horn relay shows same voltage as battery too. Am I missing something? Could my ground be bad since the cylinder head is painted and not bare metal? Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks

You say the engine is grounded from the back of a cylinder head to the frame, but is there a ground connection from battery to engine? The negative battery cable is supposed to bolt to the engine block (though many people bolt it to the front of the cylinder head). THAT's where the starter current wants to flow, not through the ground strap on the back of the engine.

Well I just tested the battery with the key on. It went from 12.7 v to less than 1 v with the key in the starting position. Bad battery?

Agreed. Make sure you check to see if the fuse block is connected properly to the firewall. I had this problem and this is what fixed it. Check it out.

Car is up and running and she pulls like a freight train! TONS of torque. Special thanks to cutlassefi on his camshaft recommendation. Great cam for my setup!
