455 block info for trans

What am I looking for to tell if the block can support a manual trans? Pictures are very welcome.

Yes a 455 Olds will support a manual transmission. What is unknown about your block is, does it have the drilled hole for the "Z" bar pivot, and is your crank drilled for a pilot bearing? Any manual trans BOP bell housing will bolt up to any Olds modern V8.

ok so where would the hole for the z bar be, on top or the side(driver or pass.)? also is it just the crank that is to be drilled, my block was hooked to auto originally the block cast# 396021F on front, I believe its the original engine out of my 70 442.

The drivers side rear. Here's some pictures I had on the computer of the Z bar installed.

Then here's a block on a stand. Look for the bolt hole near the back of the block, just under the head and toward the transmission. The bolt hole with a round pad milled into the block around it. Just forward of the alignment pin for the transmission or bellhousing.

Of course, the lack of a threaded hole for the Z-bar pivot ball just means that either you need to use a hydraulic throwout bearing or a bolt-on bracket to mount the ball. And the pilot bearing issue is obviously in the crank, not the block.

I hand drill the crank about 1/2" in and make it a bit larger than the input shaft of the trans. Then get the adapter pilot brg. Have never had any problems.
