455 in a 72 cutlass convertible

Hello,

I'm planning on installing a 455 into my 72 cutlass to replace the tired the 350 thats in there now. My question is will the motor go in without any modifications to the ac unit? I would still like to keep my unit as it works fine and I'll need it during the California summer days coming up.

Just drop it in and drive away. Use the 350 motor mounts and everything else off the 350. The pulleys and water pump, unless the pump on the 455 is the exact same length. Your A/C brkts and P/S brkts will all bolt on. Hoses, fan, bolts all the same. If your 455 has exhaust manifolds, great, best to use them.
You will have to rework the head pipes to the manifolds, muffler shop no big deal. You may have to upgrade your radiator.

Gene, I've been talking with projectheaven through PM's. Do you have an extra 455 or know where he could find one down there? He's in the Bay area.

Hey Gene,
Your timing is perfect. John and I were just talking about you thru pm. I'm thinking of buying a 455 from him because I'm having a tough time finding one here in the bay area for a decent price. Would you happen to know where I can find one?
And thanks for the info on the fitment of the 455.

Must be the day for contemplating engine swaps, because I logged on to ask the identical question for my 72 Supreme Convertible. Also, is the Turbo 350 in stock form strong enough to handle the 455, or should I (we) look for a Turbo 400 also?

Brown, the TH350 is strong enough for a stock build 455 for street use. If you tweek the 455 you will need to either tweek the TH350 or get a TH400...especially if you plan to make passes on a drag strip.

I believe the engine mounts are the same , but the 455 frame mounts are shorter (or closer to the frame)to make up for the height difference. But i could be wrong...........

Engine mounts,
64 to 68 all the same, small or big block
69 to 72 small block OLDS, brkt and mount
69 to 72 Big block OLDS, brkt and mount
These are all for "A" body Cutlass, not full size car.
some places list RT and LF mount, but I have never seen that.

I'd prefer a complete drop in. Kind of just want to drop in and drive. I'll build it up later.

I'm a short timer and already I can see how dead this horse is...It should be a 1 post sticky in both Big Block and Small block forums.

"If you are using 350 frame mounts use 350 engine mounts. If you have 455 frame mounts use 455 engine mounts. Either will work as long as frame and engine mounts match."

I was speaking of the engine mount question specifically, but you are right; the common solution to a tired 350 is a rebuilt 455

Hey Joe, what about moving it to the Big Block / Small Block sections for more visibility? Just an idea...

1966 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Turbo Sedan - $2499 (san leandro)
May have found what you needed its on Craigslist and in very good condition, pull your combo and switch them out and then sell the car to recover some if not all or more of your money. Hope this helps out!
