2" American Racing Headers fitment on "66 w/455

Has anyone installed 2" American Racing Headers (P/N OBBA-64200312HR) on a 1966 442 with 455? I know a mini starter is required, and that the brake block on the frame has to be relocated. Where were the clearance issues (if any)? How bad were the clearance issues? Would love to see pictures. Any comments on how the 1-7/8" (P/N OBBA-64178300HR) headers fit on the same car would be appreciated too. My car has manual brakes w/dual master cylinder, and a manual transmission. Thanks!

Unless you’re making over 600 use the 1 7/8. They’ll be plenty.

Making 590 hp last time tested with 1-7/8 inch tubes. Peak torque was at 5000 RPMs. Would probably be over 600 with 2 inch tubes.

Tell us more details please. Inquiring minds, as they say.

Was a drag car. Now converting to street/strip. Had no fenderwells due to Headers by Ed partial fenderwell headers. Want to put fenderwells in the car. Header calculators all say I should have at least 2 inch headers, Just found out that ARH has 2 inch headers claimed to fit. Don't know how that could be based on the fact that I have had 3 sets of headers in the car from 1-3/4 to 1-7/8 and none fit worth a darn! Hope someone out there has installed them and can tell me how they fit!

Because Nick just might know a thing or two about Oldsmobile.

I personally have not installed them, but I have a set waiting to go into my ‘65.
But I have heard lots of folks say they fit very well with no issues.
That said, I’m with you…every set of headers I’ve ever installed on an Olds has been a bear.

But they’re gorgeous!

I guess I’m lucky, the hooker 1 7/8 inch headers on my car are 20 years old, don’t leak, and fit great. I did have them recoated a few years ago.

I had hedman 1 3/4 inch before, I do remember they didn’t fit particularly well. The fact the hookers fit so well might be from the stuff I learned with the Hedman headers. I had the engine out during the header swap, I took the time to relocate the brake distribution valve while I had all the room to work.

I have a set of the ARH 1-7/8" headers on my 65 442. They were the easiest headers I have ever installed by far. They literally went right in.

Chad, was the engine out when you added the headers?
I’m looking at my 65 with a mock up 455 in it and I can’t imagine they slip in…from the bottom?
Deets please if you remember.

Pete, the engine was in the car and I had it on my lift. With the starter and oil filter adapter off I could literally slide either header in and into position in seconds.

Thanks Chadman! How were the clearances once installed? How was the clearance to the steering shaft? How was the clearance to the transmission crossmember?

Clearance to everything was just fine. I didn't need to dent any tubes at all.

Thanks to everyone. Pardon my ignorance...can someone tell me if the 1965 and and 1966 cars are the same configuration, or are there differences that make header clearances different? Thanks

1964 to 1967 should be the same. Just remember to use the correct frame mount with the correct motor mount.

A friend had a 66 F85 442 and we installed a set of Hooker 1 7/8. We had to massage over the passenger side A frames, between 5 and 7 to get the Z bar in place. We had already done disk brakes and relocated the distribution block. He drove it over twenty years. He bought a 455 built by Joe Mondello himself and we put a new set of Hookers on without any mods at all. Just means some fit and some don't.
