1973 olds 455 smoking

My engine is burning oil on the drivers side bank of cylinders,,The passenger side exhaust does not blow any smoke...ONly 1 sparkplug has oil on it in on the drivers side..Could this be bad valve seals or rings..

Could be either.

Do a compression check on the cylinders and post your results that will give us a better idea of whats going on. Others will chime in will more suggestions.

Last night i took off the valve covers and the oil drain ports in the head were clogged,,I clean them out but it all back together but the smoke remains...If I am driving down lets say a nice length of road it does not smoke,,,But lets say when I release the gas pedal and coast to a stop,,It will start pouring smoke out the drivers side exhaust pipe...When i go take off again it will blow a big puff out and pretty much stop...When i start it up and let it just sit there and idle it will smoke a little,,The lnger i let is set there and idle the more it starts smoking...I will try to get a compression tester....thanks

I've got $10 that says it's valve seals. They are relatively easy to change with the heads on the car.

I have had a few mechanicals qoute me a crazy price on changine the seals with the heads on..A local machine shop told me he could do me a complete valve job for 180.00...But i have to take the heads of...Taking the heads off i assume is easy,,never done before but idk,,,I just hope if i do that then that will fix the smoking...Yesterday I started it up and let it run for maybe 20min. It never stopped smoking...Now its not smoke screen type smoke but it is there...Its really got me bummed..I have completed replacing the back window metal under the rear windsheild and it look great...I also repaird the front edge of the roof where it was rusted a bit...Got the new vinly top on, but everything is shadowed by the damn smoking engine...

i hope i don't have to pull the motor..My budget won't allow for a rebuild right now so i would be stuck not driving it for awhile..

Since you have identified what cylinder has the oily plug I would also suggest a compression test on that cylinder and on the others to see if there is a ring problem.

Yes you should.
Pull all the plugs, to do the test.
Pull the coil wire.
Check all cylinders, graph it out.
Put a squirt of oil in each cylinder on a second test, and graph that out too.
If there is a major difference on the 2nd test, you may have a ring problem.
If there is little, or no difference, it indicates that you have worn guides (common), and missing umbrella's (very common).
This will not be etched in stone, just indicators.

Share your results, we can help walk you through the issues here.

IF the heads need guides, that will double the cost of that quoted valve job price-be aware of that and the cost of new parts. I have no doubt that you will need some anyway.

Might be a good idea as well to prop open carb throttle plates during testing.
